BORG: I'm sittin' at a table downstage right sucking on an Irish. Whisky. Straight. When she walks in.
(Cara enters. ALA femme fatale and goes to the table.)
CARA: This seat taken?
BORG: Looks like its waitin' for somethin' beautiful.
CARA: I'll take the compliment. And the chair. (she sits) So why the long face?
BORG: I'd call it oval - but if you gotta know - I'm thinkin' about life, honesty, privilege, karma
CARA: Woo. them's drinkin' words (MIRSKY in apron with bar towel)
MIRSKY: what'll it be?
CARA: I'll have what he's- (BORG drains his whiskey) -had.
BORG: Make it two - and make 'em mean it. (MIRSKY goes to the prop shelf for more drinks)
CARA: What happened - you get robbed?
BORG: 'Smatter of fact yeah -
CARA: - sorry to hear it -
BORG: - I got the money back -
CARA: - well you ain't exactly celebratin' -
BORG: (holds up a black bag) A few weeks ago I left this bag at a joint near the Flatiron where I sometimes have lunch. I go back later - the gal hands me the bag - short a hundred forty clams.
CARA: That's runnin' around money
(MIRSKY sets 2 whiskeys on the table, exists subtly with Borg's bag which he pre-sets on a chair for the upcoming demonstration)
BORG: You said it. So I make a stink and the manager, Korean guy named Charlie, asks me the whens and wheres and says he'll look into it- Next day Charlie calls: says "ya better come see this". Pulls out a tablet and shows me a full color video from the security cam.
( Clip lights on upstage "flashback" area on Male & Female Neos at table and male neo on chair with backs to audience. The Male/Female couple stand and exit revealing Borg's bag on chair)
BORG: I see my bag where I left it. Then a guy goes over and starts rifiling through it. (Male neo does this) Can't make out his face but I see him fingerin' my Andrew Jacksons. He pauses a moment - then pockets the dough and scrams. (Clip light out)
CARA: (whistles low)
BORG: Charlie says he knows the guy - comes in every day - local Security Guard.
CARA: The fox watchin' the hens. So whatdya do?
BORG: I tell Charlie to find out where he works then show him the video. Say I won't tell the cops if he returns the dough. Next day Charlie fingers him - guy says he needs a few days to recoup the cash. And I leave wondering. Suspicious of everyone I see. The girl behind the counter. The cook on a break. Everyone on the F train.
CARA: 'He cough up the clams?
BORG: 'smatter of fact he did. Gives Charlie 99. needs more time for the rest. Charlie asks me if I wanna meet the guy.
CARA: Did'ja?
BORG: I didn't. Didn't wanna show my face. Might want revenge
CARA: hey - you were the victim in all this-
BORG: Was I? I left 140 cash in plain sight. Pretty tempting to a stiff makin' peanuts.
CARA: Maybe. But he chose to steal and now it's on him to make it right.
BORG: the 99 in my hand didn't make me feel better. What's this guy's life like? he have kids? I didn't want him to lose his job.
CARA: did he?
BORG: He brought the 41 bucks.
CARA: (finishes her drink) You got your money - the crooked Security guard keeps his job - and you're like a kid with the mumps - you wouldn't know a happy ending if it landed on your face. (she throws the water in his face and leaves as MIRSKY walks over)
