The Nasty Bits ( a drabble)
I saw a manicure on Instagram today. It reminded me of Christopher Stanton. Then I remembered Henry Fitzgerald used to do Marianaâs manicures, was trained in the nail polish arts. And here we are :)
Chris and Jake belong to @ashintheairlikesnow. Chris references a past piece called âItâs Not Hypotheticalâ where Chris goes off on another student, Callie. Who totally deserved it. I donât know when these stories actually line up on the timeline, but Iâm saying itâs New Yearâs weekend right after Henry decides to get sober for good.
warnings | bbu, trauma survivors, trauma recovery, discussion of sobriety, hard discussions, bad memories, angst. Just a lot of angst.
~*~*~
âIâm almost done, I swear!â Henry giggled, trying to keep his shoulders steady as he painted on another line of top coat.Â
âYou, you said that when you did the, the, the stickers,â Chris rolled his eyes, but grinned toothily.
âWell now I mean it for real,â Henry replied with an easy wink. âBesides, we had to do the stickers. The stickers are the best part!â
Chris nodded. His whole body hummed with energy, nearly vibrating the couch cushions underneath the pair of them. Henry liked it, found it familiar and settling. Jake hadnât seemed to believe him the first time he said so, but the man â tall and strong as he was â seemed less and less suspicious of him over the last few visits.Â
Henry could have sworn he flashed him an approving smile when Chris had found the nail decals at the drug store, asking Henry if he new how to put them on.Â
Of course I do, Henry had grinned, plucking the package out of Chrisâ hands. Besides, if I do mine too we can have matching Tree Rexes.
But he knew there were limits and quickly finished up the last nail with a decal on it. It was just for fun. It didnât have to be perfect, no matter what Henryâs instincts told him.Â
He rested Chrisâ hand back on the magazine cover, then screwed the brush back into the top coat bottle. He flashed a crooked smile at his friend. âAll done!â
His hands were still a little shaky from drying out. Not every decal was straight and some of the glittery white polish had smeared, but Chrisâ was flashing him that same thousand-watt smile.Â
OC Moodboard: Nicky & Baldur
A small moodboard for @ashintheairlikesnow âs Chris/Baldur and Nicholas/Henry during that weekend.
18. Quiet (w.i.j.)
For @whumpmasinjulyâ day 18, I bring you Part 3 in the Water and Storm saga! Honestly, I donât know how long this story thread is going to go on, but Iâm enjoying writing it and itâs helping me make some good narrative connections for whatâs going to happen next. So, I really hope you all donât mind too much.Â
A Quick Note: @ashintheairlikesnowââs characters Oliver Branch and Chris Stanton (the sweetest bean) are mentioned here; Chris and Henry met once a while ago and the bits of dialogue were written by Ash in a tester scene RP we worked on back in June. Thank you for letting me borrow your sweet bean, Ash!
Now, enjoy!
cw: forced isolation, hunger, exhaustion; mentions of ownership, training, and gross men being gross together. (Let me know if Iâve missed anything!)
~*~*~*~
The last rays of sunlight shone pink under the crack of the bathroom door and across the shining white tile. Henry could see it from where he sat, languishing in the bathtub. The colors of sunrise and sunset, the chiming of the clocks below him, and his own bad instinct the only things that created a sense of time. Henry scrunched down in the tub, leaning his cheek against the porcelain side. Wednesday night, maybe. Just about 8:30 in the evening, judging by summer sunsets.
Another day gone in the long week stuck in the small space.Â
Another day passed feeling useless and anxious.Â
Two more days before someone would come back for him, maybe. Henry wasnât going to let himself believe he would just be allowed out without giving more of himself over. It didnât work like that. There was no way he was just going to be allowed out - allowed back into the main house, back into his bed and clothes, back to the food and sunshine, without any consequences.
Mariana didnât work that way.
Alexander likely wouldnât work that way this time, considering he had gleefully locked Henry in there to begin with.
Henry had heard them laughing through the vents, spending that first evening congratulating themselves on another punishment well done while he struggled and rolled to get out of his restraints.
Henry sighed, watching the pink fade to grey, well on itâs way to turning black. He pressed his fingers and the flat of his palm into his stomach, trying to silence the growling. It had gotten worse in the last day and a half, bouncing off the alls of the bathroom and clawing its way up his throat. He felt hollow and stagnant. He still had a protein bar and two packs of fruit gummies left, all of which he was saving should Mariana and Alexander decide he needed a few more days of atonement.
Lots of water and laying still on the floor quieted the noise, the empty feeling, but not for long. All that stagnation, the laying around and boredom -- it made Henry itch underneath his skin. Itch for his bed and blankets, to move and squirm and stare at something else but blank white walls. It to stretch and sprawl, to run and lay out in the summer heat. To simply do something, anything else with his body.Â
He had spent hours of time stretching and twisting his legs across the cold tile; lying flat on his back and seeing how far he could push his hips into the air; measuring how far he could roll his spine until he could lick the skin of his knees.
The books in his backpack lay discarded on the floor like his once-damp jeans and shirt. He had read them both twice all the way through before throwing them across the room in frustration. He had unlaced and re-laced his shoelaces eight separate times before throwing those away too. He had even cleaned the bathroom, scrubbing it top to bottom until the cleaning chemicals made him woozy.
How did anyone do this much nothing for so long?
What would Henry cook for Chris - or Karen Renford?
For Chris: Absolutely nothing that Henry remembers cooking whenever Alexander would have Oliver over for dinner. None of that. In fact, Henry would probably immediately default to things he and Chris could make together! Iâm thinking homemade pizza with whatever they wanted on top.
If Laken came with Chris, Henry would probably kick it up a notch and make dumplings (Harry taught him once and heâs very proud that they stay closed when he folds them now!)
For Karen: Henry would default to exactly the same meal he made for Marianaâs celebration dinner, which Karen was invited to -- butter lettuce salad with radishes and vinagrette, rabbit and mushroom sugo over pappardelle, and five-spice and honey poached pears + a lot of good red wine.
(Yes, I have in fact thought a LOT about that dinner party that I still have not written.)
Send Me an OC and Henry will cook for them!
