Chess The Musical Fandom- A Guide to Newbies
Ok I realized I was doing a lot of talking about us veteran fans guiding the new ones without doing any work myself so I'm fixing that. Welcome all you who have come here from the new Broadway revival, this fandom is close knit, been around for a WHILE (literally four decades), and over time not only has this show become infamous for the amount of variation it has, but the fandom has come up with some specific terminology to understand it all
Shipping
There's... a lot of shipping potential with this show since the character dynamics are one of the best parts of the show. Fortunately there aren't any toxic shipping wars or anything, honestly I think many of us are just trying to figure out the formula for Maximum Doomed By The Narrative. Only 2 of the ships (the most popular two) have widely accepted names.
Kings- this is the ship between Anatoly/The Russian and Freddie/The American. this is probably the most popular in the fandom. I saw some newbie fans of Twitter trying to come up with a new name for this but guys kings is already peak. this is not a fandom in its infancy and if you want to look through the beautiful AO3 backlog you gotta look through kings (sidenote, if you are looking for a good kings fic to start with, I cannot recommend board of bishops enough)
Queens- this is the ship between Florence and Svetlana and the 2nd most popular ship in the fandom! let's go lesbians let's go! my beige flag is I can make anything about queens very quickly I love them I think they should kiss after IKHSW.
Flonatoly - The ship between Florence and Anatoly. This one doesn't have really a consistent name (leave it to us to find agreement on the gays but not get consistency for the mf pairings lmao). Flonatoly is the one I see most nowadays, but there's other names floating around, if you do some fandom archeology there was a group of Pinterest fans in the 2010s calling it starcrossed though that definitely isn't in use frequently now
Fredlence- This is the ship between Florence and Freddie. There's not really many other names I've seen for this one. A lot of people don't ship this one in canon or post canon so a lot of Fredlance you'll see is precanon thoughts (we like our things doomed by the narrative here folks!)
Waltokov- This is the ship between Walter and Molokov! If you want old man yaoi you've come to the right place. This one goes by many other names besides Waltokov, such as Diplomats and Agents.
Divorcees- This is the ship between Anatoly and Svetlana. I've also seen this one called Sergievskies and Svetoly. Again the more doomed it is the more narrativer it gets.
there's also a lot of polyamory ships, the most popular one being Florence Anatoly Freddie Svetlana all together. The only one that has a common name for it that I know of is Those Three, which is FreddiexFlorencexWalter.
Scripts
Script taxonomy is probably the most important thing to know for interacting with Chess and it's many versions. there are 3 major versions with 2 other significant versions. All other Chesses can be considered derivatives of these 3 major scripts
BritScript- This is the original script. Concept album is included in this. Primarily a sung through version. Act 1 typically in Merano, Act 2 typically in Bangkok. Anatoly faces Viigand in act 2, and typically is the winner. Freddie is defending champion in act 1.
BwayScript- Following the original West End run, Chess transfered to Broadway with a Trevor Nunn who was frustrated with his lack of control in the West End production due to his stepping in for Michael Bennett. Richard Nelson was brought on as an additional book writer. This version is a book musical rather than sing through. Act 1 is typically in Bangkok, Act 2 is typically in Budapest. Anatoly is defending champion in Act 1 and faces Freddie in both acts. The Act 2 winner varies in the derivatives but in the original 1988 Broadway version, Freddie wins.
Chess på Svenska- or simply Svenska, is the Swedish version of the book, first introduced in 2003. This is a pretty dramatic rewrite with new book by Bjorn as well as new writers Lars Rudolfsson and Jan Mark. This version strips away a lot of the Cold War tensions and focuses on the romantic drama. The entire thing takes place in Merano. This also was the version to first introduce He Is A Man, He Is A Child. The derivatives of this one are all non-English productions, but don't let that stop you because Svenska productions have produced some incredible performances (Helen Sjöholm my beloved)
Australian Script- This is primarily a Bwayscript derivative, but is considered its own script considering how changed this version of the show is. It has a new unique book by Tim Rice and a lot of the songs are very changed. The major production with this one is the 1990 Sydney production. Svetlana has a much more active role which I love. ONIB is a duet between Freddie and Anatoly hitting the town together before the championship starts. There is an extended version of the yogurt scene. I can't really name any derivatives of this but I'm sure there's one out there. Fun fact this was supposed to have a cast album but it was cancelled because of economic troubles in Australia at the time, which is a huge shame considering how changed some of the songs were and how good the cast is (Heaven Help My Heart is incredible in this production). This is a terrace.
Danny Strong book- The Strong book is a newer major version. It is entirely a Britscript derivative aside from borrowing HIAMHIAC from Svenska, Strong has admitted he has not interacted with Bwayscript at all. This is the version the current revival is using. This version debuted with the 2018 Kennedy Center production (KenCen), and since has been in two other productions, the 2022 Actors Fund Concert at the Broadhurst (Choncert), and the 2025 Broadway Revival (Chevival). This one is not very well liked by the fandom at large for. many reasons. The Broadway script is notably a bit different from the previous 2, most notably with Someone Else's Story being a Florence song moved to the end of the show, rather than being a Svetlana song mid-Act 2.
Productions
Most production names are self explanatory but there are some key ones/ones with weird names, so here's a list of those so you can identify them in the wild!
Choncept- Original 1984 concept album
Broadway- Original 1988 Broadway production. The revival has its own distinct name to differentiate! If someone says Broadway Florence, they are talking about Judy Kuhn, not Lea Michele.
RAH- 2008 Royal Albert Hall Concert. This is the version with a proshot with Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, and Josh Groban.
Choncert- 2022 Actors Fund Concert. There's been a lot of concert stagings of Chess so idk why this one specifically is Choncert, but it stuck pretty quickly right after this production happened so if you see someone say Choncert it is this specific version (Lena Hall Florence I love you so much)
Chevival/Chrevival- This is the specific name for the 2025 Broadway Revival. It tends to get spelled both ways but they refer to the same production.
Space Chess- 2011 Altenburg /Bielefeld Germany production. Famously one of the wackiest Chess stagings ever. It gets its name from the overall 60s scifi aesthetic it has. This shit is looking camp straight in the eye. By the time you are watching Space Chess, any hope for you is lost. It's not just a brief interest anymore you are in the hole.
Miscellaneous
Other key chess terms it's probably good to know!
The Yogurt Scene- A scene originating in Bway script in which Freddie has a freak out over Anatoly eating yogurt during the match, accusing him of "getting signals! FROM THE CHOICE OF YOGURT" Variety and order of yogurt flavors consumed by Anatoly vary by production. Based on a real thing that happened at the 1978 World Championships between Korchnoi and Karpov.
Cherver- A Discord server called "Chess musical clusterfuck" Theres a few chess discords floating around but this is definitely the biggest and most active.
