Bitty woke up when Jack climbed out of the bed, way too early in the morning. The sun had not risen yet, and Bitty wanted to groan. Especially with all the exertion last night, he was too tired to be awake at this ungodly hour.
Thinking about it, being reminded about his first time having sex last night, his first time, made him blush. He wiggled and stuffed his face into his pillow, as if to hide his blush, and Jack noticed. He pressed a few kisses into Bittyâs hair, murmuring soft âI love youâs and promising to be back in 10 days after his roadie, that heâll miss Bitty and call as much as he can.
Jack had packed last night, just needing to do a quick morning wash and then head off to the arena where their bus was waiting. Bitty nestled himself, wrapping the blanket around his back, already missing the warmth from Jack pressing against him.
When Jack re-emerged from the bathroom ready to go, he came back to kiss Bitty on the lips, soft and chaste, a reminder of their love. Even though Bitty could not manage to fully open his eyes, Jackâs ministrations sent heat down his chest, and an "I love you, Jackâ left his lips with a smile. He felt a warm hand caress his cheek, run through his hair, and then lift off, leaving him a cold ghost of a memory before sinking back into sleep again.
Later, as Bitty woke up with sunlight shining onto his face and blinding him even through his eyelids, he felt cold. He wrapped himself up in the blankets even tighter, and shuffled his burrito-body into the kitchen to make himself some coffee. Despite his constant chirping, heâs thankful that Jack had instant coffee so that he could whip up a mug without needing to wait for a pot, or worry about wasting the rest. Bitty understood thatâs why Jack had it, since he lived alone and couldnât finish a whole pot of coffee by himself.
Looking around the apartment, standing in the kitchen, it felt empty, lonely. Thereâs too much space for one person to fill by himself, the open distance of the apartment just too cold. Is this what Jack comes home to all the time? Bitty wouldnât be able to bear it, he thought. Maybe Tater laid himself over the couch here, just like he did in the Haus. Maybe Marty and Thirdy have played pool with Jack, admired his photography on the wall next to it. Maybe George stopped by often, to run together.
But all that didnât change the fact that Jack lived alone, and spent most of his time in this apartment without anyone else. The thought made Bitty shiver, he had never lived alone in his life, and the prospect of it felt awful to him. How could Jack stand it?
They talked about it sometimes, Jack always saying Bittyâs calls made him feel closer, right next to him. His post it notes are all over the fridge door, his clothes in the drawers, his toiletries next to Jacks in the bathroom. Jack says it reminds him of Bitty, and itâs enough. It wouldnât have been for Bitty, if their positions were switched.
The feeling of loneliness stuck to Bitty as he packed, as he sat on the train back to Samwell, as he baked a maple apple pie, thinking of Jack. Despite the warming April weather, the oven dutifully preheating, Bitty was struck by a chill, holding himself around his body waiting for his crust dough to cool more. Heâs just missing Jack, nothing much, though returning to an empty Haus didnât help his mood.
Luckily, as he was just staring off in a daze, huddling around his waist, Chowder came back and spotted him. Immediately, he sensed something off with Bitty when he wasnât greeted with the usual mothering, and went in for a hug. Bitty relaxed into the hug instantly, wrapping his arms around Chowder and burrowing in for the warmth he was missing.
âHow are you doing Bitty?â Chowder was concerned; Bitty had never been so physical before.
Bitty shrugged while still buried in Chowderâs embrace. âI just miss Jack a lot, I guess.â
âHeâs going on their last roadie, right? Theyâre playing the Islanders, Rangers, Sabres, and Leafs all in a row.â
âMmhmm.â
Chowder rubbed his hands on Bittyâs back, eliciting a soft sigh. âIs the roadie making you miss Jack a lot more than usual?â
âI dunno. Maybe?â Bitty mumbled into the shark on Chowderâs hoodie, not willing to let go just yet. Chowder was so warm, even through the hoodie, Bitty could feel the body heat, and he felt comforted from it.
They stayed like that for a while, and Chowder chattered about the Sharks and the Falconers and their playoffs prospects. Bitty just let himself relax into Chowderâs embrace, forgetting about his pie for the moment, just allowing the comfort of Chowderâs body and presence to seep into him.
âHis apartment was so empty,â Bitty remarked during a lull in Chowderâs commentary. That made Chowder stop talking to listen, as words waterfalled out of Bittyâs mouth.
âIâve been in his apartment alone before, but it was never like that. He would always come back from his run, or his game, or something. This time, he woke up next to me and left me to be alone and not come back and I know heâs not leaving me but, I guess it still felt emptier, I guess? I dunno. Itâs silly. Iâm being silly.â
Bitty tried to push himself out of Chowderâs circling arms, but Chowder firmly said, âItâs not silly. You miss Jack. Itâs normal to feel like this and you can always ask us for hugs if you need them, Bitty.â
That seemed to knock its way into Bitty slowly, as he nodded slowly before inching his way back into Chowderâs chest. Their arms tightened around each other as they breathed their way into the comfort of a simple embrace, of touch, of knowing the value of the warmth of someone elseâs skin, of the fulfillment of the whispered cry: ânever let me goâ.

Whenever Chris can't fall asleep at night, he goes to a window and looks for the moon. The reason Chris looks for the moon, though, is because he would catch his father doing the same. Occasionally, his father would have some tea out, steeping in the teapot.
Day 2: Family Dinner
Bitty Doesnât Know How To Use Chopsticks [AO3]
It all started with almost-Christmas. According to Holster, Christmas means Chinese food (gotta love that Holster logic), so almost-Christmas means SMH family dinner at the Chinese restaurant off campus. And then Bitty did The Thing, he did That. He asked for a spoon and fork.
Day 3: Future
âWhat are you gonna do when you graduate?â [AO3]
and everyone always thinks
to have a five year plan:
âI see myself beingââ
nostalgic for the future when
daydreams run me through my life
to come, I think maybe Iâll be a
goalie for the NHL
coder at Google or a startup
father with a wife
more of the same
Day 4: Frogs
let the rain fall down, iâm coming clean [AO3]
Thank goodness it was a Sunday with no practice, no games, no upcoming midterms, no homework due soon. Chris could lounge about all day and do whatever he wanted. And whatever he wanted was to sleep the damn day away because of his goddamn flu, thatâs what he wanted. It was miserable, cold November winds blowing outside, and he had been sneezing his throat raw.
Day 5: Sharks
Chris Just Really Loves Sharks, OK? [AO3]
Chris loves shark fin soup. Itâs so unfortunate that he does, because he craves it sometimes, and he knows he canât have it. Because sharks are so awesomecool and deserve to live.
But they taste so good.
Day 6: Ships
Make Your Own Wind [AO3]
Itâs not like you to get lost. Youâve always found your way, despite feeling lost. Youâve always taken to heart that your ship will return, battered but not broken. It will float right up to home port and straighten itself out, lining up to caress the docks, letting you land onto solid ground, stable beneath your feet. Whenever youâre lost, your ship will never forget how to it always wants to be found, wants to be guided back home.
Day 7: Birthday
He Want That Cake [AO3]
Chris Chow 2:44pm
Hey Dex! Are you free today after class? I need a favor
Can you drive me to RRY? I wanna get something
Me 2:58pm
Let me check?
I think Bitty wanted me to help him in the kitchen
Bonus Questions
Q&A #4 ChowChow destroys the NHLÂ [AO3]
Hey hey whatâs up Chowchows? This is your boy Chris Chow and I recently asked for questions and here it is, our Q&A with the main ChowChow55. Are ya ready kids? [âaye aye Captain!â from Spongebob sound effect]
It's not like you to get lost. Youâve always found your way, despite feeling lost, youâve always managed to look to the moon, the stars, and point yourself home.
Maybe itâs because this time, youâre lost about where home is.
It still remembers. But now you notice, after being away from home for not long enough, that the docks are smaller than how you imagined. Itâs still the same size. That post still touches the 3rd porthole while the other post touches the 1st. The ship remembers its dock, but you feel like itâs too small, like theyâre just toys in a bathtub bobbing, plastic, full of meaning but also that the meaning was not important.
But it is important. This ship has guided you home! Time and again you have trusted it to pull you back, and it has. It has. It has pulled you back and this time it doesnât feel like home, not fully, not anymore.
There is a ship called Chris, that sailed to the new port of Samwell. You spent 4 years there, building, waiting. It felt like how home used to feel. You ship lines up well to the docks there too, even when you know all these ships are just here for upgrades, like yours. This is no place to stay forever. So you build, and wait.
Home is that way. Home is not here.
Youâve built and built and timeâs up. You donât feel prepared enough. Thereâs everything needed, but whereâs the wind? Where is the wind to set your sails out to new seas? Where is the breeze that always came up to push you on a tailwind? Where is the tugging on your hair to point you to the new direction you were meant to head down?
The clock is ticking. Which way are you headed? The clock is ticking closer. Which way? Hurry. The clock is ticking and will strike soon. Thunder and lightning will strike soon. The ports are being cleared, you need to leave. Which way? 360 degrees and you only need to choose one. Hurry. Hurry. Find your own trail to burn or one will be burnt for you, and then you wonât be able to say âI chose these scarsâ.
Too late. The port recedes by itself, and you are thrust out to sea. No Helens to set forth towards, no Ithaca to return to, no winds to set you adrift, and still you are adrift. The seaweed ensnares you, the barnacles grasp on, and you feel yourself slowly gaining weight, slowly sinking. Did you forget how to point home? Home is that way. Or is it that way? Where are the stars, the moon? There are no clouds but you canât see the sky, only the sails standing silently waiting to rise or die.
Thatâs it then. Break them down. You tear off the sails and pull down the masts, carve them into oars to row your way, any way, to find a new home. You can make your own wind, you just have to walk fast enough, row fast enough.
The sky shows itself in the clear black night. The eye of the moon blinks its slow blink, watching. This time, you can see where you want to head, even if you donât know whatâs there. You know that no matter what, wherever you land, your ship always remembers how to line up to the docks, glide in slow, wind in the sails or no, you can make your own. Home is that way, because you decide it to be.
[Also on AO3]
If it isn't clear, Chowder moves to Samwell and feels a bit lost, then graduates and feels very adrift, until he decides to carve his own path.
Inspired by 3 specific Chinese proverbs:
čšĺ°ćĄĽĺ¤´čŞçśç´: A ship will naturally straighten out when approaching a dock. Meaning things will work out in the end.
ä¸äşäżąĺ¤ďźĺŞćŹ ä¸éŁ: Everything is all set, except there is no wind. Meaning you have everything prepared, awaiting the crucial starting signal or final element.
ç ´éć˛č: Break your cooking pots and sink your ships. A general commanded his army to do this after crossing a river into enemy territory, so ensure there is no turning back and they would have to fight with everything they had to survive. This idiom is used to mean someone has committed fully and there is no turning back.
You know how in Moby Dick it just goes on about whales and their anatomy and how to hunt and process them? Yeah, this is gonna be like that.
Chris loves shark fin soup. Itâs so unfortunate that he does, because he craves it sometimes, and he knows he canât have it. Because sharks are so awesomecool and deserve to live.
But they taste so good.
Actually, they donât really taste that good. Theyâre kinda bland, and have this strange texture. Like gloopy, is the best word for it really.
His uncle showed him the whole process once. He managed to get real shark fin, like the scales and skin was still on and everything. And he spent days processing it.
Real shark skin is really really rough. Like tear-up-your-skin rough. Chris learned this the hard way. Shark scales arenât really scales. Theyâre denticles, literally teeth on the skin. They have ridges and help guide water and make them swim faster, but those ridges are sharp and can cut you up. Chris learned to respect sharks and keep his distance from their skin since he tried to touch that fin his uncle brought home.
It smelled like any piece of seafood, really. Salty, briny, kinda stinky. His uncle scraped off all the scales and soaked the shark fin for days. Actually, he boiled it for hours and soaked it, changed the water, and repeated it until it was soft and slippery, which took many days in total. Then he picked off the skin and harder basal cartilage until the softer fin cartilage remained.
Sharks are incredible. Theyâve been practically unchanged since before bony fish even appeared. Osseous fish, the ones with bones, and everything else with bones, came after sharks, which have no bones, only cartilage. They have been so successful in their aeons of history, only to be wiped out by people eating their fins for soup. Soup! Itâs preposterous.
In the soup, the softened fin cartilage is boiled with ginger and stock to remove itâs ocean odor, and after a few hours is drained and you get this tasteless, odorless, gloopy pile of fin. His uncle said that the special thing about it is the texture, nothing you can get from the imitation with glass noodles and starch. Like how birds nest is so unique. And Chris gets it. The one his uncle made was the best he ever had. EVER. Heâs been disappointed ever since, at every wedding. Itâs just not the same.
But god he doesnât want to kill anymore sharks.
People think he loves the San Jose Sharks because heâs from the Bay Area. Thatâs only half true. The real reason is because theyâre sharks. Heâs been writing to them for years, saying how they could help with shark preservation if they just gave a damn about their mascot animal.
Sharks are dying horrifically. Chris has seen the videos. Theyâre hauled up on deck, their fins sawed off, and the rolled off back into the water. Where they sink because they can no longer swim. And not only that, they suffocate because many sharks are ramjet breathers, meaning if they donât keep swimming, they canât run water over their gills and die. Either they starve, or suffocate. Itâs cruel! When Chris found out, he cried so hard. Both because of the suffering of the sharks but also because now he canât have any shark fin soup anymore.
Now, every Shark Week, he just turns off all the media because have you seen it? Itâs ridiculous! Sharks kill fewer people worldwide per year than sitting under falling coconuts for godâs sake! And yet TV and movies keep trying to make sharks this deadly killing machine, which ok it is, but not to humans! It pisses Chris off so bad.
He campaigns for Shark Week every year in school. They always expect some overexcited dumb surfer dude kid to talk about how dangerous sharks are the first time, but Chris always surprises them with passionate speeches about oceanic conservation and the importance of apex predators. Did they know that without sharks, coral eating fish are contributing to the demise of coral reefs? No! Of course not. Saving sharks saves coral reefs, but all they think about is âSHARK = DANGERâ.
Somehow, every year, it also devolves into âSet Sharks Free, Shut SeaWorld Downâ. So many sharks have died trying to be captured for show, and still they keep trying. Reef sharks are fine, they can be kept in artificial reefs, but people always want to see the big open-sea sharks. Chris would love to see them too, if it werenât for the fact that they keep bumping their noses into the tank walls and injuring themselves and eventually dying of cabin fever. Aquarium fever. They need space! Miles and miles of space just to swim and stay healthy.
At least the Aquarium of the Bay doesnât try to keep big open-sea sharks and their Shark Week is pretty good and not scare mongering. Chris would have volunteered at AotB each summer, if his parents didnât send him to smart kid camp to do math and science and things like that. Maybe this summer, he can go back and intern on their media team, or web dev team, or even DBM, data input, whatever! Chris just wants to save the sharks. Better yet, get on the SJS intern team and fix their godawful SharkWeek promos, work with the AotB and finally get his favorite team to put their voices behind their favorite animal. That would be âswasome.

Since @chowderweek is still reblogging posts, have some (really late) Chowder/Nursey for the family dinner prompt.
On AO3 here.
âIs it even cold there?â Nursey asks. Â Chowder watches through his computer screen as Nursey adjusts his beanie absently, squishing down more of his curls flat against his head.
Chris snorts, because theyâve played this game before. Â âI live in Californiaâ translates for Nursey into âI have never experienced a day of cold weather in my pre-Samwell lifeâ, no matter how many times Chris reminds Nursey that he lives in the Bay Area, not LA.
âOf course it is,â Chris says. Â âItâs night, and I live in Northern California, Nurse.â
âGoogle says your average temps. are between 44 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit in December.â Â Nursey has said it so many times that he has the numbers memorized. Â Itâs only a little bit embarrassing. Â âYour minimum temperature is our maximum temperature.â
âCold is relative,â Chris reminds him. Â âNot all of us want our cities drowning in white stuff.â
âNah man,â Nursey says. Â âIf you think a single inch of snow in New York City is white, youâve clearly never been there. Â Itâs gross and dirty from the people and the cars within like. Â A day, tops.â
Chris cracks a smile at that, and when Nurseyâs face breaks out into warm, self-satisfied grin, a wave of fondness floods Chrisâ chest. Â His thoughts go in two directions at once. Â He can definitely picture Nursey grimacing at the tar-stained slushy snow, walking around in his hipster boots that look cool but definitely arenât actually made for actual cold weather.
But he lingers longer on the mental image of Nursey walking through the streets of New York just as the snow falls, his breath fogging up the air and the green beanie that matches his eyes protecting his hair from the snow as he stares up at the sky and thinks about stuff like⌠Â
Chris doesnât know, exactly. Â Heâs never been able to imitate Nurseyâs thought process, to capture the way Nurseyâs words come out both thoughtful and also more concise than Chris has ever been in his entire life. Â Chris loves the quiet moments when Nursey shares his more pensive thoughts out loud; theyâre few and far between, like Nursey was taught to keep everything locked up tight.
He probably was.
âSo how has time with your family been going?â Chris asks, and itâs enough to get Nursey going. Â He talks about staying with his grandma for Christmas, and how his favorite cousin coming in town almost makes spending the holidays in the âburbs worth it. Â He talks about all the passive-aggressive extended family reminders that he should maybe consider a major that is more âeconomically feasibleâ than English. Â
âReally, though, itâs been pretty nice,â Nursey says. Â âEveryoneâs in one place. Â We donât get that too often.â
Every time Nursey talks about his family, Chris canât help but think how different it is from his own. Â Nurseyâs family is huge and seems relatively warm, but everyone is so scattered geographically. Â People went away for school or moved for jobs or married out of the NYC area. Â Nursey has family in Chicago and family in Georgia and family in Florida and family in Connecticut, and getting them together in one place is a challenge and a half. Â
Chris has some family back in China, but not much; his grandmother went back home to take care of her sick mother not long after Chris was born, and even though she always says that sheâs coming to see them around the Chinese New Year, Chris knows better than to believe it by now. Â And Nurseyâs met all of Chrisâ state-side family. Â Chrisâ parents make every excuse they can to visit their alma mater, and Chrisâ sister came up with them for freshman year parentsâ weekend. Â When Chris finally told his parents he was dating Nursey, a few months into their relationship, they turned it into a whole big thing, insisting they take Nursey out to dinner to get to know him better.
They loved him, of course. Â They loved Nursey when he was just Chrisâ friend, and they liked him even better when he survived the first boyfriend and parents dinner with flying colors.
Chris has met Nurseyâs parents once, when they came to take Nursey to school freshman year. Â Chris didnât really know Nursey very well then, and he spent most of orientation weekend with his own parents.
It isnât anyoneâs fault that he hasnât gotten the chance to really meet Nurseyâs parents, but it always tugs at the nerves in Chrisâ gut a little bit more than heâd like, in a way he probably shouldâve brought up before but has never been brave enough to.
âMaybe next year I can go up there with you, too,â Chris says, his voice tentative. Â âWeâve been together long enough for me to meet the family, right?â
âC,â Nursey says, his voice gentle. Â Chris is almost embarrassed by how soft it is, is almost embarrassed by how easily Nursey has picked up on the fact that he needs to be soft. Â âI would love that. Â My family would love that. Nana Nurse has asked about you twice already. Â If I hadnât shown her all the pictures of us on my Facebook, she was gonna start running her mouth to the aunts and uncles that I was making you up.â
âAll of the pictures on Facebook?â Chris asks, surprised.
â...Most of the pictures on Facebook,â Nursey amends, sheepishly. Â âBut they all really want to meet you. Â I think theyâd love you.â
Chris can feel his cheeks bursting with how wide heâs smiling, his braces on full display. Â âIt would be really, really, really nice to stay with you in New York and to meet your family and to get to see your hometown. Â You can show me all the tourist traps and complain about the crowds of people who donât know the basic rules of walking in a city.â
âI can have you eat your pizza the right way,â Nursey teases. Â âFolded over like a reasonable person.â
âI can bring a selfie stick and take a zillion pictures of everything we see, staring around wide-eyed like Iâve never seen tall buildings before,â Chris replies.
Nursey groans, and Chris knows heâs won. Â He laughs, relishing the victory for a second, before he settles back down.
âI think Iâd love your family, too, you know,â Chris says, more seriously.  âI wanted to be home as much of this winter break as I could, because itâs my sisterâs last year before she heads off to college.  Next year weâre going to have different schedules, with me coming back early for hockey and her applying mostly to schools on a quarter system.  But⌠next Thanksgiving, or next ChristmasâŚ.â
âYeah,â Nursey agrees. Â âNext year we can have our first Thanksgiving together. Â Our own little family dinner.â
It sounds better than Chowder could have imagined.
Chris stands alone in the tunnel, shifting back and forth on his skates to work off the nervous energy thatâs followed him from the dressing room. He knows from years, years, of experience that he wonât feel settled until heâs skated around his crease and gotten comfortable between the pipes. The movement helps a little bit though.
He closes his eyes and breathes deeply, taking comfort in the artificial ice smell that all arenas heâs ever played in have. The sound is different here though. The roar of the crowd is muffled but loud, almost drowning out the music and the announcerâs voice. It wraps itself around him, tightly enough that the rest of the walk down the tunnel feels like a dream.
ââŚand now, your 2022-2023 San Jose Sharks starting goaltender. From San Francisco California, CHRISTOPHER CHOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.â
Chris steps on to the ice and itâs like the volume of the crowd has been turned up all the way finally. He raises his stick in acknowledgement, does the half lap that he was told to do, and skates over to join his teammates where theyâre lined up at the blueline after their home opener introductions. Chris bumps shoulders with Petrov, his backup, who grins and knocks his blocker into Chrisâs helmet, knocking the mask down. Chris rolls his eyes and push it back up. Petrov elbows him again. This time when Chris looks over, Petrov jerks his chin towards the jumbotron so Chris looks up, and his breath catches in his throat.
The cameras pan over the crowd. Chris remembers being in that sea of turquoise, white, and black when he was a kid, but itâs even more impressive from this end. He never saw people wearing a #55 San Jose Sharks jersey though. Chris canât keep count of how many he sees now. Like the one heâs wearing, CHOW is stretched across the shoulders of the jersey, and everyone wearing it looks as proud as Chris is to be wearing it on home ice in the Shark Tank.
Chris tears his eyes away from the screen and looks out through the glass, wanting to see the jerseys in real time just to make sure theyâre real. Heâs distracted trying to spot one that he doesnât hear it at first, but after he spots a young girl wearing a Chow jersey and right against the glass, what he thought was just thousands of voices shouting to their own tunes comes together in one cohesive sound.
âHappy birthday to you, happy birthday to you,â the crowd sings.
Chrisâs jaw drops. Â
âHappy birthday dear Ch-ow, happy birthday to you!â They finish with another loud cheer and Chrisâs teammates all bang their sticks on the ice, hooting and hollering and adding to the cacophony. Chris knows thereâs a camera on his face, and knows that itâs probably picking up the tears that have sprung to his eyes.
He doesnât care.
Chris raises his stick again, this time in thanks, and he didnât think it was possible for the crowd to get louder, but they do.
Itâs a hell of a birthday gift.
a/n: because i suffered through making a timeline cause i used numbers*, im gonna share: chris graduated in 2018 and he got signed by the sharks right away, but played in the ahl for a couple seasons (as most goalies do) before getting called up and staying up as the backup for the 2021-22 season until the starter retires in the off-season and chris becomes the starter in the 2022-23 season (and stays as the starter for a very long time)Â
