So, with the Necronomicon being sentient and all, it definitely has a sense of awareness towards itself. It is aware that it is a book, one that is deemed very evil, but … honestly? Bro’s very neutral on where it stands with humanity and gods.

The Necronomicon serves not only as a ‘Book of the Dead’/tutorial on how to summon YOUR favorite eldritch being, it’s also a gateway of sorts, between our world and the nightmare that gods like Cthulhu would more feasibly exist in.

So, does that make it evil? Is a key the good guy for locking the cell door to a criminal? Should guilt be assigned to the axe that executes? What I’m saying is (in this world at least) the Necronomicon, by itself, isn’t inherently evil. It can simply facilitate evil beings.

Now, all of that, plus a healthy dose of this book being centuries old, I like to think it’s sort of … tired of only being a book. A legend, a thing to be used. To cope with that, I think it begins to develop a dull sense of humanity, especially towards Elijah (and it’s not just because they’re blood-bound … that’s a post for another day … little evil laugh …).

When Elijah, DeLainey, and Izzy first find the book, it … definitely isn’t how they thought they would. Uhhh to summarize an absurd series of events, DeLainey and Izzy infiltrate a cult, steal a sacrificial goat, bring it to Elijah, and while they’re all panicking, deciding what to do, the goat just … explodes. And, actually, it isn’t a goat at all. Lying there, where the animal used to be, is an old, one-eyed book, bound by human skin, and seemingly untouched by the gore that’s surrounding it (and that is covering the rest of the room).

This cult was planning to destroy the Necronomicon by placing it and its soul into a mortal host, trapping it for a short period of time, just long enough to be killed. But that obviously didn’t work out. Worse yet, DeLainey named the goat when she thought it was just a goat.
