Another entry in “Games I am finally getting around to playing,” Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s a bit shorter than the average platformer, but it makes up for it by featuring more personality in individual levels than other games can fit in entire worlds! Heck, those levels might have more personality than individual people I’ve met! Not to say those people were uninteresting, heavens no, just not half as interesting as the dancing baobab trees in Grassland Groove.

I will admit, however, that the enemy designs often trend less towards the “weird” and more towards the “charming,” which is never a bad thing! I mean, look at this wonderful cartoon shark!

Pretty wonderful, but I couldn’t say too much about it other than the fact that it’s a wonderful cartoon shark, you know?

That being said, it’s not like there’s nothing in Tropical Freeze that can be considered weird, oh heavens, no! One of the top examples has to be Chompasaurus here, first encountered in the background of a barrel rocket level chomping up the penguin pilot of a mech that chases you throughout the stage, you encounter them proper in the level “Fruity Factory,” where they appear crawling alongside walls, ceilings, and whatever other surface they feel. They might look like your average Audrey II-type plant monster, but that’s okay, because I love Little Shop of Horrors, and they hold a surprise that easily sets them apart!

Once you get into a certain radius, the Chompasaurus will attempt snagging at you with a long frog-like tongue, which is really something you don’t see in your average flytrap-beast! Once you’re inside, you gotta shake to get out and deal some damage. If I remember correctly, you gotta hit them three times to kill them proper, like some of the other “big” enemies in the game.
