For years, I have long wanted to do marquetry realisations of Chinese Peking opera masks. I was fascinated by their range of designs and colours. Each pattern could mean something and even the colours could represent an emotion or a feeling. I never had the skill set nor the know-how to even start attempting to create a marquetry version of one. Up until now.
I am no expert but from what I gather, this mask represent a character by the name of ‘郑子明’ or ‘郑恩’, - A general of the Song Dynasty.
This piece allowed me to explore incorporating different materials. I used bone (for the jaw), brass (for the forehead) and mother of pearl (for the eyes and lips).
This was a very complex design to work on and was glad to finally complete it. This marks the end of my training in Paris and the start to my marquetry realisations.

Lei Haiqing’s Furious Pipa Smash
There’s an old Chinese saying: “Actors have no loyalty, prostitutes have no honor.” It’s full of prejudice, born from a time when entertainers served the powerful and had no status. But that doesn’t mean all performers lack integrity—many use art to speak truth and resist pressure. During the An Lushan/安禄山 Rebellion (755–763 AD), Emperor Xuanzong/玄宗皇帝 fled the capital Chang’an/長安 amid the chaos and bloodshed.
Rebel leader An Lushan, to fake prosperity and celebrate his usurpation, forced captured court musicians and performers to play music and entertain at banquets. Many complied with fake smiles.
But one brave musician, Lei Haiqing/雷海青 (a renowned pipa/琵琶 master from the Tang imperial pear garden/梨園 troupe), refused. He openly cursed An Lushan as a traitor, then smashed his pipa toward the rebel in defiance.
Enraged, An Lushan had him brutally executed (tortured and dismembered in some accounts).
Later generations honored Lei Haiqing’s loyalty and integrity. He became revered as the patron god of Chinese opera and theater, known as Tian Du Yuan Shuai (Field Marshal，田都元帥) or the “God of Theater” (戲神 / xì shén), still worshipped by performers today.
A timeless symbol of artistic courage and refusing to bow to tyrants. 🎭⚔️
