Chickee Roof Pattern - January 2020 The Chickee (image two) is a shelter made from tree poles and palm leaves. When the Seminole were hiding in the swamps, this design was developed so that it trapped the smoke from the firepit in the middle of the Chickee. The smoke drifted out of the ends but stayed close to the ground so that soldiers looking for the Seminole camp would not see the telltale sign of a fire. The smoke also helped control mosquitoes and other insects. The image of the pattern created by the palm leaves was taken from inside the Chickee. It is an interesting image that I thought needed some context so I also posted an image of the Chickee from the outside. MWM
