Ceramic jars full of emeralds found in temple tied to El Dorado, a mythical city of gold
Archaeologists in Colombia have found eight ceramic jars, with metallic figurines and emeralds inside, within a temple and its adjacent graves.
The ancient Muisca (also called the Chibcha) crafted the jars called "ofrendatarios" about 600 years ago. The Muisca, a people whose civilization flourished in the region at the time, were famous for their metal-crafting skills, and their work may have inspired the legend of El Dorado — a legendary city made of gold.
Between 1537 and 1540, the Spanish conquered the region, and many of the Muisca were killed during fighting or due to disease. Despite the destruction, the Muisca persevered and thousands of their descendants live on today. Read more.
Thinking Like a Mountain (2019) / dir. Alexander Hick
If she wasn't here, everything would be different. There would be a bridge over the lake... — ...and restaurants at the shore… — It would be a swimming pool. — Even we would come to see it out of curiosity... — ...and think it's a perfect place. — Yes, and we would hope that they will buy our bags...
That feeling when
you start learning Quechua by accident. And get frustrated at the lack of material in English. And start learning (more) Spanish by accident to help, which is actually great because the only source on Chibcha I can find is in Spanish and the Aymara stuff at least makes sense (there’s at least one text on Lokono in English) but there’s still no authoritative source with a complete list of Quechua suffixes and that’s annoying so...
it becomes a problem.
(Why am I doing this? Good question. I think I must have gone mad sometime last month. Or last year. At some point anyway.)

Chibcha Goddess Huitaca Many of the myths of pre-Hispanic cultures about the creation of the world and human beings speak of a primal feminine state of the universe. The Mother Goddess ruled from the bowels of the earth. But later, when the patriarchy was imposed on the societies that were governed by maternal rights and matrilineal descent, irreverent goddesses like Huitaca arose, opposing the order of the patriarchal god Bochica. As a punishment, Bochica transformed Huitaca into an owl. He gave her feathers and made her fly only at night as a guardian of darkness.
