Yana-Wara (2023, 🇵🇪), directed + shot by Óscar Catacora & Tito Catacora
The posthumous work of Óscar Catacora (Wiñaypacha), completed by his uncle and filmmaker Tito Catacora and shot entirely in Aymara, the film unravels the case of 80-year-old Don Evaristo who is accused of murdering his 13 year old granddaughter, Yana-Wara. Aymara filmmaker Óscar Catacora died at 34 during the making of this film (only his second feature) due to appendicitis.
Wiñaypacha ('Eternity', 2017 🇵🇪), directed by Oscár Catacora
The first Peruvian film shot entirely in the indigenous Aymara language tells the story of an elderly couple named Willka and Phaxsi (Sun and Moon) living in a remote part of the rugged Andes mountains. The pair stoically face the challenges of daily life while waiting for the return of their son Antuku, who has migrated to the city. The film is based on the lives of the director’s maternal grandparents—his paternal grandfather plays the role of Willka.
Self-taught director Oscár Catacora died in 2021 at the age of 34 from appendicitis, which he could not treat in time due to the lack of medical posts in the province of Collao, where he was filming Yana-Wara. (His uncle Tito was able to finish the film in 2023).

The Andean technique, "knotting" and "cross knit looping", which are similar if not the same as nålbinding.
There is not one singular indigenous name for this technique noted in the book, but I did find the word q'iwa online which comes from the languages of Quechua and Aymara and refers to "the general act of spinning and twisting threads". If there is more words, please let me know! I'd love to know!!!!!!

Though many Westerners draw comparisons to Las Vegas, Mamani clarifies that the shapes, colors, and patterns he uses are drawn from Bolivia’s pre-Columbian history. In particular, the aguayo, a bright woven cloth of the Aymara, an indigenous group that Mamani is a part of, inspires the architect’s designs. Mamani shared in an interview with The Guardian, “My designs are a modern expression of our culture,” he adds. “Since Evo Morales [the country’s first indigenous president] became president, things have changed a lot. We feel proud of being Aymaran.”
