“so ... four steps in, i think it’s supposed to start resembling a pumpkin by now. but it just looks like...not a pumpkin.” words were more than likely supposed to be kept to herself, filtered through what the kids should hear and what they should not - alas, kahlan’s thoughts are expressed, the doubt and confusion she felt toward the craft mirrored by the kid sitting across from her. ‘ i’m lost. ’ a boy, in kahlans eyes probably 6 or 7 , declared matter-of-factly.
instead of offering him a firm and believable ‘me too’, the redhead reached across the table to retrieve a pair of scissors and an oddly labelled container of glue. “we should start thinking outside the box. let’s create a pumpkin out of construction paper! who thought origami made sense for a craft booth?” kahlan. it was kahlan’s idea. organizing supplies, kahlan regrouped, then started from the beginning. she handed out several sheets of brightly coloured paper, then instructed the children to share the glue and scissors. “you can put any face on it that you want. just use markers, or you can cut the face out.”
for a moment it was peaceful - previously chatty kids then engrossed in their art. “this isn’t so bad. i love kids.” kahlan turned toward the other woman, “i’ve got this under control. right?”
