What happens when an Italian missionary picks up a copper plate and tries to hold a Chinese landscape inside European lines? Matteo Ripa's "View of a Part of the Imperial Summer Palace in Chengde (Jehol), China" is that collision made visible. Sunlight falls in ruled diagonals from the upper left - neat, geometric, Baroque - onto a scene that resists every impulse behind those parallel hatches. The pavilion on stilts floats above still water with upswept rooflines that curve like breath. Pine branches scatter across the foreground like calligraphy strokes trapped inside a grid. Birds drift in loose clusters above mountain ridges that recede in soft greys, and two waterfowl sit motionless on glass-flat water. The whole thing hums with a tension it never resolves. Ripa was a Neapolitan priest at the Kangxi Emperor's court in the early 1700s, commissioned to engrave 36 views of the imperial retreat at Chengde. He carried European intaglio technique into shanshui territory - and neither tradition won. The monochrome palette reads like ink wash, but the method is copper and burin. The mountains want to dissolve into mist the way Chinese painting demands, but the hatching won't let them. Every mark is a negotiation between two ways of seeing. He brought his plates back to Naples in 1724, where they were reprinted for decades. Now in the Rijksmuseum, far from both Rome and Chengde. Belonging fully to neither shore. I don't like a state where only physical beauty works, because if it's just beauty, it is kind of boring. The project is located in Fengning Manchu Autonomous County in the middle zone between the farming culture of the Central Plains in the south and the animal husbandry culture in the north.
