There’s something it’s time for me to admit, maybe you’ve already guessed this, it seems obvious, but my favorite part of dance music isn’t dancing. It’s the elaborate labyrinth of different genres and classifications, especially when the dance music originates from Great Britain. Burial is almost exclusively classed as dubstep and, wow -- I’m on a roll here -- I don’t know what dubstep is. I know what dub reggae is and I’m still waiting for that to be enough information to carry me past confusion. I know I could look it up, read the Wikipedia page; it doesn’t matter. I’m going to keep listening to what I like and figuring out the user-generated word cloud when I finish looking at vintage wool sweaters on Ebay. Now that I’ve disclosed my total ignorance, I don’t think Burial is dubstep anymore. “Chemz” is definitely a Big Beat song -- think Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy -- but, like, early Big Beat. As the genre reached mainstream popularity (ha ha, I know, what is Big Beat?) the songs got faster and more conventionally structured, but in the early-90s it was a genre of breakbeats and samples. “Chemz” is a love song, but at the same time the sampled voicemail (”hi it’s Brooke”) glows with intimacy, I can’t help but think it’s a love song to Acen’s “Trip II The Moon.” It’s rave work, complete with so many pills that some slip through your fingers and get crushed on the black floor, and it’s the biggest Burial song to date.

Of the many, many times MG’s forced me to listen to Burial for this list, “Chemz” is the first that one of his songs hasn’t actually needed to win me over. I’ve slowly warmed to Burial over the years, finding things to enjoy in even his more ambient moments, but this is just a ten minute segment of a good late-evening DJ set and I love that. The energy is jittery but not anxious, the vibe is positive and open, the transitions are neatly timed but not so smooth as to escape notice. Maybe I’m just a sucker for a Ne-Yo sample? Burial flips it beautifully, as he does Allure, building an immaculate vibe from disparate pieces - which is his thing, has long been his thing, but which he’s rarely done with the propulsion he uses here. This still isn’t quite dance music to actually dance to - both the reason MG loves Burial and the reason I’ve always been skeptical - but if you know what you’re doing, it would at least be worth giving it a try for “Chemz.” And that’s thrillingly new.
