I recently watched Descendants: Wicked Wonderland and while I did enjoy it I do have some thoughts on it that aren't exactly positive.

I didn't really get why there were so many new characters from the beginning. There are ten "main" characters. Red and Chloe returning after the Rise of Red movie, obviously but then also Pink, Hazel, the Smee twins, Felix, Luis, Robbie and Max. Not all of them are even memorable. As I was writing this I forgot Robbie was even a part of the "main cast".

Robbie and Felix were written out when they could've been useful characters. Felix has powers and Robbie is great at the bow just like his father, Robin Hood and yet they immediately get written out of the plot on two separate occasions. So them being there wasn't needed in any way, shape or form. You can take them out and it won't change the plot or affect the story negatively. Although they could've been useful if they were allowed to stay considering their skill set.

The smee twins are the opposite, they also weren't needed but they are more useless "haha funny" comedic relief characters that do.. a poor job for that role. Again, you can take them out of the plot and it wouldn't do much. One of them was even written out of the story to be with Robbie and Felix and it didn't matter or change anything significantly.

Luis is just there to be the love interest. He is kind of pointless besides that and even then he and Red don't have that much chemistry. Red has more chemistry with Hazel and Chloe than the one she's supposed to like. When Luis was supposed to be helpful and "sacrifice himself" in the maze- it literally didn't do anything, it just wrote him out of the ending plot. Red still had to go around because the other side closed before she could cross making it, just, pointless they could've done what Max and Chloe did and wait or they could've gone around and stuck together.

Hazel feels like she's only there to argue with the HK's and more specifically the love interest. Again, she doesn't do much but without her Pink wouldn't have followed Red and the others to help them. So she was needed but kind of only for that and to show the rift between the HK's and VK's relationships.

As for the new addition to the hearts family, Pink was also sort of just there but that actually was addressed and was relevant to the plot. Red was only tolerating her and allowing her to tag along because this was all new to her and she did need someone who knew this new version of her home. Pink did become useful in the later part of the movie when Red finally came to the realization that, yes, she did need her sister for more than just a tour guide. Taking her out of the story would greatly affect the plot, so she does need to be there though they definitely could've utilized her character better and should've focused on the strained relationship between her and Red.

Speaking of strained relationships let's now discuss Chloe and Red. I have a lot to say about them so.. buckle up.

I feel like their strained relationship came out of nowhere. They weren't even that close in the other movie until maybe the end and even then, at the start of this movie Chloe is asking Red to be friends which means- they weren't confirmed friends until the start of the movie. The movie also takes place right after their time travel, the literal next day and the following days afterwards. They wake up after coming back to the present and realize they may have messed up. When they get to the school Chloe is explaining who everyone is and then reminds Red she is no longer a VK and rather an HK now. However later down in the movie it seems like Chloe forgot that Red wasn't always an HK and didn't consider herself a HK yet because it's literally only been a couple of days since becoming one and she immediately had to go save her own mother because of the new timeline. Red's "Divide" between the HK's and the VK's shouldn't be surprising to Chloe given that up until recently Red was a VK. Yet Chloe is getting upset for Red acting how she was brought up. I do wish we could've gotten more insight into their relationship and seen why Chloe actually felt the way she did but as it is now, it seems a bit out of the blue for them to be like this. I do understand it's never fun to realize your friend threw you under the bus or in Chloe's case use her as live bait so I do understand her point there. However, she was acting as if she and Red were way closer than they actually were then getting mad at the "sudden switch up" from Red that just, never happened because they weren't that close and they just became friends recently. And Chloe's whole "I had your back every time" is just, also, wrong. In the last movie she didn't even trust Red fully until the scene where Red shows Chloe she doesn't want to be a VK which is the scene in Merlin's office where they're trying to get the cook book to stop the prank.

As for Max, the last on this list, I did like his story. He was grappling with the fact that everything his father did was balmed on him. Even though he took no part in it and was trying to be different. Even the other VK's weren't blamed for their parents actions, at least, not to the extent that Max was. However, they did handle his story poorly. There was a lot of potential and I am disappointed that his story arc wasn't handled better.

As for the other secondary antagonist, Chessy the Cheshire cat- well, I think she was underutilized as well. In the beginning she hinted at being a famous, chaos driven character- but she fell short of expectations, not really having a paw in the plot and only showing up a couple of times. I do hope in any future movies she will be explored more and live up to the expectations that were set for her.

Maddox, I did like him as a villain but he felt a bit underwhelming. His song was nice though. Very catchy. He felt underwhelming because he wasn't that active in his own plan. He used the cards from far away and only kept the queens locked up. Most of the film we don't see what he's doing and don't get much of an idea of how he is supposedly the #1 villain throughout the kingdoms. It's mentioned that he terrorized the kingdoms with his "deranged inventions" but the most we get from that is the dodo birds and the oculus (sorry if I'm spelling this wrong I don't remember the spelling at the moment). Most of what we're told is that he spoke of time travel and was deemed mad and put on the isle.. and the oculus is what caused him to be mad and that's it. As a villain, he is a bit underwhelming. Usually when a villain is working behind the scenes it's a buildup towards their grand scheme and the heroes/protagonists have to figure out what it is/who they are and stop them in an epic endgame battle but we didn't get any of that. He is easily defeated and dare I say he didn't even put up much of a fight. His story had potential but again, it wasn't utilized correctly so he felt underwhelming.

And finally, the other characters. I honestly don't think they needed to include Charming in this movie. He only got like two scenes and he didn't even do anything. He ran up to the mirror before it broke and then called for his wife- but we didn't see him after that until the party scene where he's dancing along for some reason. My issue with this is, he should be more concerned about his wife and daughter but we aren't shown that he is. He just stays put instead of searching for a way into wonderland. We aren't even shown him talking to the council to speed up the plan or anything. Cinderella didn't do much either and I get that the focus is on the children but she didn't really think her own plan through and had to rely on her daughter to save her. Which she went to wonderland to prevent...? But I did like her song with the queen of hearts so it wasn't all bad.
