1. What does their bedroom look like?
-excluding the pillow fort in the corner, an utter disaster. It looks like an ion storm (ironic) blew through it and tore it up. To James, though, it’s just perfect. He can find something in his room faster than anyone. He finds it impossible to work in an excessively clean room (the exact opposite of Azviel omg imagine Azviel trying to clean his room owo). In one corner he outfitted a two sections: One for his engineering experiments and inventions, littered with possibly unstable parts and tools; and another table filled with graphs and notebooks which are both filled with endless amounts of equations and theorems and ideas (oh my). Even his bed is a mess, with books and the likes which no matter how hard he tries to keep them off, the always end up there by the end of the day.
2. Do they have any daily rituals?
-he always wakes up an hour early to stretch (or maybe catch some exercise with Azviel) and sometimes work on his theorems and inventions. Another routine is just before bed, Alette will always work on his theorems. Something about creating complex equations that can theoretically bend spacetime can put James to sleep.
3. Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often?
-James doesn't exercise much, he stays fit mostly by just running around the ship fixing things and stopping life-threatening situations. But since he met (and began a relationship with) Azviel, he has been joining her on her morning exercises.
4. What would they do if they needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy?
-He would either grab a snack that he has lying around his quarters, or simply not eat. It all depends on how busy he is or how deep into something he is.
5. Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)
-He is a huge messy dork. Sometimes he doesnt clean out his quarters until its literally impossible to live in. His workplace is a little neater, but not much, which is mostly because his crewmates always force him to clean it up. They swear he can't go a day without making a mess in engineering.
6. Eating habits and sample daily menu
-He often eats 'fast-food' type of meals, very rarely having proper meals unless its a date or some important occasion. Surprisingly he's still thin as a stick, that rat bastard.
7. Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time
-Either working on his inventions and/or theorems, having quality time with Kitty, or, more recently, going on adorable dates with Azviel.
8. Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging
-He loves loves loves cheeseburgers (like me owo) and could go a whole week eating them. He actually has once, although it made him sick for nearly a week. To him, it was so worth it.
9. Makeup?
-Once. Kitty made him do it. We don't talk about it.
10. Neuroses? Do they recognize them as such?
-James cannot deal with failure at all, which is evidently shown in his panic attack when he couldn't discover a way out of the holosuites. This is caused mostly because when he was young, James had a serious case of lungworm, making him absent from a good portion of his school year. When he had returned, he was expected to know everything he missed. When he couldn't, his teacher exploded on him, nearly literally throwing him out of the class. Even when Alette had collapsed in tears his teacher still yelled and screamed at him. In addition to his later diagnosed anxiety disorder, this caused James to try to never fail in anything he did. When he did, he believed that he will be scolded and yelled at. This evolved with him to just simply making him have a panic attack like the one had gotten the first time he failed. Also, He doesnt think of himself very highly, often thinking that the crew would be better off without him.
11. Intellectual pursuits?
-James will pursue practically anything. He's studied medicine, music, writing, chemistry, botany, geology, etc. But most of all, James is obsessed with theoretical physics and pseudoscience. A good portion of his work is attempting to verify various pseudo-scientific theories.
12. Favorite book genre?
-Science Fiction, most definitely. With Fantasy being a close second.
13. Sexual Orientation? And, regardless of own orientation, thoughts on sexual orientation in general?
-James often refers himself as bisexual/biromantic, but sometimes thinks he may be pansexual/panromantic. Considering that James' crewmates make up almost the entirety of the sexual/romantic orientation spectrum, James loves nearly every orientation. Actually, on second thought, James is definitely pansexual/panromantic.
14. Physical abnormalities? (Both visible and not, including injuries/disabilities, long-term illnesses, food-intolerances, etc.)
-he is tall as SHIT man! also skinny as hell i mean woah if he turns to his side its like he disappeared! He also gets various pains due to crawling and running around the ship fixing things.
15. Biggest and smallest short term goal?
-Biggest: GET AZVIELS MEMORIES BACK
-Smallest: use the restroom (being erased then reassembled really fills up your bladder, doesn't it?)
16. Biggest and smallest long term goal?
-Biggest: Submit one of his inventions to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers to be used across the Federation (and the galaxy)
-Smallest: Possibly get married one day.
17. Preferred mode of dress and rituals surrounding dress
-He's generally in his redshirt most of the time (no rest for a chief engineer!) but whenever he can he will simply wear the simplest clothing possible. Unless, of course, he has the chance visit his Jazz Age holoprogram, then he will put on that period's style of clothing faster than you can say Jack Robinson.
18. Favorite beverage?
-Definitely Earth coffee, or tea. no wait maybe 21st century soda drinks! he's very indecisive.
19. What do they think about before falling asleep at night?
-Either Theoretical Physics, engineering, how sexy the warp core is, how sexy Azviel is, that kind of thing.
20. Childhood illnesses? Any interesting stories behind them?
-When he was young he had a bad case of lungworm, that caused him to miss tons of school (see earlier answer for the repercussions of that)
21. Turn-ons? Turn-offs?
-Turn ons: Xenolinguistics, the ability to hurtle a ship at speeds faster than that of light.
-Turn offs: sadistic doubles of his crew, a broken warp core
22. Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?
-write down experimental equations, or doodle his favorite starships
23. How organized are they? How does this organization/disorganization manifest in their everyday life?
-James finds disorganization to be completely organized enough for him. His room and his workplace are proof enough of how this manifests in his everyday life.
24. Is there one subject of study that they excel at? Or do they even care about intellectual pursuits at all?
-James excels at engineering. An absolute genius. People always ask him why he's 'stuck' on the Excalibur and he always replies, "I'd much rather be doing my job with people I love than doing my job with people i don't." Given that he has pursued medicine, writing, music, etc. in his life i think it's safe to say that he cares deeply for intellectual pursuits.
25. How do they see themselves 5 years from today?
-If he'd have to answer this question, he would say either he'd be in the same place he is now, or wherever life takes him.
26. Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t work out?
-His plan is to stay in Starfleet, keep fixing ships, and make inventions. A contingency plan? Possibly music.
27. What is their biggest regret?
-Either not saving his sister when she died, or not being with Kitty when the massacre happened.
28. Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy?
-His best friend ever would be Kitty. She knows him better than anyone and he knows her better than anyone else. They've been friends since the academy. they worked together, cried together, and even cuddled together. He's been there for her when she got back from the massacre, and she was with him when he lost his sister. By now, they're almost literally co-dependent (also i have a headcanon that the two convinced Brenin to place their quarters so that they're next to each other uwu). James usually harbors no negative feelings for anyone and, if anything, hates himself more than others.
29. Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (eg The house is on fire! What do they do?)
-James would do two things; make sure everyone else has escaped the danger, and attempt to fix/repair/stop the danger.
30. Reaction to sudden intrapersonal disaster (eg close family member suddenly dies)
-The reaction wouldn't happen at first. He would try to comfort others if they were effected too. but then after a while, it would hit James, and it would hit him hard. Everything would be a blur; the violent sobbing, the screaming, the pain. He'd try in vain to pull himself together. It would take days, maybe even weeks, before he could be the least bit functional again.
32. Thoughts on material possessions in general?
-James likes to keep anything that has any sort of memory attached to them. But some things are incredibly sentimental.
33. Concept of home and family?
-Overall, James had a fairly good relationship with his parents and his sister. When his parents died, the siblings became closer. When his sister died in his first year at the Academy, James could barely pull through. Now, James considers Kitty his closest family member. Home is wherever a warp core is.
34. Thoughts on privacy? (Are they a private person, or are they prone to ‘TMI’?)
-He's generally a private person, but given time, he will practically tell you his whole life story. Of course, put a few bottles of alcohol in him and he'll talk (and cry) about literally everything (really, he once cried over warp theories, but who hasn't?)
35. What activities do they enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time?
-James loves to sleep, whenever he does. However, James thinks working on his experiments and theories and whatnot is more important than sleep. He does get his 3 hours in every night though, well mostly every night.
36. What makes them feel guilty?
-James will always feel guilty about failure. No matter if it's his fault or not, he will feel guilty about it.
37. Are they more analytic or more emotional in their decision-making?
-James tends to mix the two together in his decision-making. He always initiates the analytic side first, deciding on what will or won't work, how effective it will be, etc, etc. Then he'll apply the emotional side, judging (sometimes incorrectly) how others would respond to the decision. His emotions rarely affect his analytic decision-making though extreme stress or extreme emotions in general will impair him tremendously.
38. Would they consider themselves a Type A or Type B personality?
-He would be in between (kinda like a AB blood type kinda thing? right? eh). He can be very easy-going and very accepting to new ideals and concepts (Type B). However, James gets very stressed very easily, ambitious (to a point), and pushes himself further than he actually can (Type A).
39. What recharges them when they’re feeling drained?
-pillow forts, popcorn, & movies with Kitty, and working on pseudo-scientific theories
40. Would you say that they have a superiority-complex? Inferiority-complex? Neither?
-James most definitely has an inferiority complex. He often covers it up and suppresses so it isnt a bother to others. He puts on a brace face and talks quickly and uses big words. He only lets those closest to him see it. Kitty is the one who knows him best and knows every last detail.
41. How misanthropic are they?
-James? Misanthropic? Nonsense!! He's far from it, he loves people! No matter what things they've done, James always tries to see the best in people.
42. Hobbies?
-Warp core repairs & tests, inventing an endless list of things, writing out theories in engineering and in physics, visiting the Jazz Age.
43. How far did they get in formal education? What are their views on formal education vs self-education?
-James got a full education, pre-school and all. He missed one semester in the academy because of his sister's death, though. James believes that as long as someone does get educated, the way in which they are educated does not matter.
44. Religion?
-Generally, James is Atheist, but respects and is interested in many religions.
45. Superstitions or views on the occult?
-James does believe in a few superstitions, like walking under ladders and tipping over the salt. He personally doesn't practice in anything in the occult (well once, but that was when he was interning on a planetary colony), but James believes that what people do is their business (as long as people aren't being killed).
46. Do they express their thoughts through words or deeds?
-Both, really. He often talks as he does the thing. Quite odd, really.
47. If they were to fall in love, who (or what) is their ideal?
-Azviel Vox
48. How do they express love?
-cuddles, extremely detailed conversations about warp theory
49. If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like?
-duck and cover, maybe run away, grab a phaser. He's not the fighting type, y'see.
50. Is this person afraid of dying? Why or why not?
-Very afraid. He's afraid of causing his friends and family pain. He's afraid he won't be remember for anything. He's afraid that someone won't know how to use the excalibur's warp core right when he's gone!
