Chapter Summary:
Conflict and a kiss and Bode is so, so lost.
Chapter Start:
Cordova’s gnarled hands were remarkably steady when he took the broken compass from Cal’s grip, regarding it gravely. The silver metal shone vaguely blue in the light from all the holobooks shelved neatly around the rebuilt library, the pieces of the compass somehow seeming forlorn. All of them were waiting on tenterhooks, Merrin watching pointedly, her gaze fluttering between him and Cal - and Cal himself poised on the balls of his feet as if ready to spring into a fistfight. Even Cere seemed nervous, though her serene aura still was settled heavily over her archive, calming in a way Bode on occasion wished it wasn’t. But then- BD-1 bleeped happily, spinning in circles on Cordova’s shoulder, and the old Jedi smiled warmly, cradling the compass still.
“I believe I can fix this, yes,” he asserted, his beard twitching alongside the smile and Cal visibly breathed a heavy sigh of relief. For a moment he just stared up at the ceiling, breathing quietly, Merrin clasping his shoulder with an emphatic nod - and then he turned, piercing stare pinning Bode in place, and cracked a lopsided grin that sent a shiver of warmth flooding through his stomach, like butterflies but heavier. Bode returned the smile with a cocksure grin of his own. Even if Cal disagreed with the best use for the compass - it was at least fixable. They could find Tanalorr, could flee the Empire’s tyranny for good. He could keep Kata truly safe from the Inquisitors and the Empire as a whole.
He could- he could try, one last time, to convince Cal to come with him.
