One Piece Chapter 1175 Spoiler
So I just finished reading the newest chapter and I am so sure Nidhogg is a bit of a red herring. Its cool as all hell don't get me wrong! And the devil fruit being in the hands of a ancient giant is obviously insanely powerful. But I think this:
is of much bigger importance.
I think its pretty much safe to say that this legend describes that Ragnir the weapon was fed a Zoan devil fruit. We knew from Vegapunk that the past had much more advanced science after all. That alone puts him into the same category as Emmet and Zunesha. Beings from long ago that met a different version of Nika. But do you all realize how much time must have passed to become a legend in giants time??
Jarul himself is currently 408 years old. There's a chance his parents or at least his grandparents were around when the void century happened. You don't have a "legend of old" about something that just happened two generations ago. That means it must have happened even further back. Most likely in the first world with the first version of Nika. Hell there's even a chance it isn't a devil fruit and actually some sort of nature spirit that just had that power before the fruits even became a thing. That makes this:
the single oldest confirmed being in the story. Probably only rivaled by Imu themself.
This is the face of something that has seen empires fall and centuries pass by.
Gods fear him and Powerscalers shiver in his presence.
Reading up on Ratatoskr and Nidhogg on Wikipedia also reveals something else that's interesting.
Nidhogg is described to be the dragon that rests at the roots of the world tree, gnawing its roots (that being the reason why we find Loki chained up in the underworld) But going into the etymology of the name, it is revealed, that this might be a metaphor of eating the ghosts of those that were malicious in life.
This gives Nidhogg despite mostly being described as something scary and bad for the world, kind of a positive twist to his role and neatly fits him to Luffy's sun god who the residents of Elbaf believed to cause chaos and destruction when in actuality he only does so to deliver freedom.
I especially find the two points of "the ones guilty of murder and oath-breaking" interesting considering Loki appeared just when Imu was joining the battle as well. The one that truly murdered Harold by breaking his trust/oath to him.
But how does the Nidhogg of myth know about the murderes and oath breakers of Midgard? It all comes back to our favourite disney-princess Loki sidekick once again:
The ultimate gossiper and shit stirrer. Ratatoskr snitches about all the juicy secrets.
I am really excited to learn what will represent the eagle in One Piece's version of this too. We still haven't seen the once mentioned upper world of Elbaf so it might still be a hidden character. But with the eagle representing something that sits high above anybody else, I wouldn't be surprised if its just Imu either.
Ratatoskr sees all and he's gonna tell his buddy about all the sins you have committed.
