Merry Christmas

And the Celebrations to come, happy: Boxing Day New Years Eve Hogmanay Kwanzaa Omisoka
And the ones I missed, hope you had a good: HumanLight Koliada Yalda Hanukkah Soyal Solstice Zamehof Day Salgirah Chalica
It’s the second night of #Chalica!
A little late (sorry!) but it’s still the first night of Chalica for the next...5 minutes!
hey there’s a December holiday I can actually lay claim to celebrating
half the time I half celebrate most holidays because I don’t really belong to any religion, I mean, I love Christmas, and also St. Nicholas and all of the history behind Christmas (even Jesus), but I’m not a Christian. I don’t always believe in God. I don’t always believe in Jesus. I usually believe in the idea of Jesus, or at least, what I want to believe of him. (There are some questionable things that I haven’t been able to check on yet.)
And even though I don’t always identify as a UU, I was raised in it, and I went through the coming of age stuff, and so technically...
so yay a new holiday to celebrate!

Chalicetide
Last night we lit our chalice for the first night of Chalicetide. It was the first time the Radish had ever seen a flame. (We don't light the chalice before dinner, these days we don't usually even make it to the dinner table for dinner.) Radish thought this was the best thing ever for about 2 minutes, which is a lot in baby attention span. It's so weird how doing this with a kid makes it feel so much more real. It felt like a tradition instead of this thing we just sort of do. I think the fact we decorated helped. I have a garland of rainbow wool balls up, and a rainbow of led tea lights (plain white tea lights with tubes of tissue paper in rainbow colors tape around them) in the front window. It's nice to have our own holiday. It's so hard not to fall back on the things we did as kids, because they are traditions and memories and nostalgia, even though we don't want to support some of those ideas and practices in our own home. It's also hard because the grandparents are so invested in those things. Instead, we will light our chalice and ask for forgiveness, do service for our community, work for justice and the health of our planet, and spend time with our friends and family.
Happy Chalica!
In 2005 many Unitarian Universalists began observing Chalica, a week-long celebration of the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism. Beginning the first Monday in December, a chalice is lit each day. Each we reflect on that days principle, and try do something to put it into practice. 1st Day: The inherent worth and dignity of every person; 2nd Day: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations; 3rd Day: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations; 4th Day: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning; 5th Day: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large; 6th Day: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all; 7th Day: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
What is Chalica?
Chalica is a weeklong celebration of the Unitarian Universalist Principles. The holiday first emerged in 2005 out of a wish to have a holiday organized around Unitarian Universalist values.
Chalica begins on the first Monday in December and lasts seven days. Each day, a chalice is lit and the day is spent reflecting on the meaning of that day’s principle and doing a good deed that honors that principle. Not all Unitarian Universalists celebrate Chalica, but it has a growing following.
