What makes a good chainset? Which chainsets arenāt suitable for you and your riding? What options are worth considering? All these cranky questions are answered in this guide. Chainsets, or cranksets, are the front section of the drivetrain and although they all look similar and perform the same function, they can be bewilderingly different on closer inspection. Crank length, number of rings, number of teeth, bottom bracket system and manufacturer compatibility and so on.

Ā TURN Zayante M30 Chainset
Ā Mark Tearle
Ā A preview of the TURN Zayante M30 Chainset along with the Praxis Works LevaTime chainrings and M30 Bottom Bracket
Ā The TURN brand evolved from Praxis Works, the drivetrain focused company known for its cold forged chainrings and conversion bottom bracket. Over the years, TURN was progressed by Praxis WorksāĀ customers repeatedly requesting a full crankset that utilised the Praxis rings and bottom bracket systems.Ā Courtesy of UK distributor, Upgrade Bikes, CycleTechReview.comĀ areĀ taking a close look at the TURN Zayante M30 130BCD cranks, fitted withĀ 53/39 Praxis Works LevaTime chainrings andĀ the M30 Praxis Works Bottom Bracketā¦
Ā TURN Cranks with Praxis Works LevaTime chainrings
Ā Turn have two products in their range, the Girder M30 for MTB and the Zayante M30 for road and cyclocross that we have in for review. The Zayante hollow forged, aluminium crankset has been named after a famous redwood covered road in Santa Cruz, California, and forms an integrated drivetrain system by working with Praxisā forged chain rings and their M30 BB system.
Ā The crank arms are made using a unique hollow forging process, aligning the grain of the metal under massive pressure, producing āa light weight, tougher, and more durable crank than others in the marketā according to TURN.
Ā Hollow forged crank arms
Ā The Zayante M30 cranks are available with either forged 110BCD or 130BCD five arm spider options; the 110BCD is compatible with 46/36, 50/34, 52/36 chainrings and the 130BCD with 53/39. Crank arms are available in 170, 172.5 and 175 lengths and it will reportedly work well with Shimano 10/11 speed, Campagnolo 10/11 speed and SRAM 10/11 speed groupsets. Ā This may all seem normal, even traditional but the clever part is that the spindle is 30mm, yet wider than traditional BB30, aiming to combine the benefits of the extra stiffness provided by a 30mm aluminum spindle and the wide bearing stance of BB86, in a similar but more adaptable way to BB386. Ā TURN say, āAdd in beautifully sculpted, hollow forged crank arms and you have a massive amount of stiffness and power transfer. Praxis Works cold forged chainrings and M30 bottom brackets round out the Zayante package for what is a very versatile road crank with superior shifting.ā
Ā Turn Crank arm
Ā Obviously you need a special bottom bracket to make this chainset work, and the clever Praxis Works M30 Bottom Bracket is compatible with frames that have a variety of bottom bracket āstandards': BSA, BB86, BB30, PF30, and ā10-13 Specialized OSBB frames. The M30 BB has forged and machined heat-treated 7075 T6 AL Cups and steel cartridge bearings available in a 68mm road version or a 73mm MTB version. Ā For installing the Zayante chainset into either BB30, PF30, or Specialized OSBB frames, the cartridge bearings are sited outboard of the frame, similar to with a BSA bottom bracket, for greater rigidity but also to keep free of frame and c-clip tolerance issues that other systems have to deal with.

Ā Praxis Works LevaTime chainrings are well established. All PraxisĀ chainrings are created using a proprietary forging process which gives them the abilityĀ to manipulate the ring shape and tooth profile. Ā This āOne-Shotā forging increases the amount of shifting features on a chainring which normal CNC manufacturing wonāt allow.Ā The process also creates a harder and tougher tooth surface for extra durability. Individual tooth profiles, alternating tooth angles, timed ramps and tactically placed shift elevators are all jam packed onto a Praxis ring.

Ā With the new cranks, chainringsĀ and BB fitted to my bike, I am looking forward to getting out in the lanes to test them out. Full review to follow as soon asĀ Iāve got some road time out of themā¦
