Here’s your reminder that this controller exists
Up there with my most favorite controller designs of all time
I'm at an arcade right now and lookie what they have
Unfortunately it’s been some time since my last post. My oldest child broke my old camera, so I had to dig out an older one to continue to take photo’s. I was unfortunately one of the people affected by the hurricane this past week, but I was fortunate enough to go to my relatives house and my brother had this wicked resident evil 4 controller waiting for me. As soon as he showed it to me, we immediately plugged it into his old nintendo wii for some super smash brothers action. This controller is truly an amazing piece, but pretty difficult to control. I can’t wait to test it again on some resident evil 4.

Resident Evil 4 PS2 Controller
After lusting for about two years, it finally happened. I got the Resident Evil 4 chainsaw controller for Gamecube! It was an early birthday gift from my lady. I was absolutely stunned when I dug into the box and seen it with my own eyes. It was sitting in a mock-up wooden collector's case gleaming back at me as I looked on like a father to a newborn child. It was almost the same as presenting Pope Francis with the skull of John the Baptist. In so many other words, I was thrilled!
I've been giving it a good, hearty workout. Seeing what games work for and what ones are no-no's. In reviews for the chainsaw, it's criticised for looking cool but being a terrible controller with awkwardly placed buttons and no way to really handle it. I said "baloney" and gave it a whirl. Since I no longer own a Gamecube, I plugged it into my Wii's controller port.
I gave it a test run on Mario Kart Wii and it worked surprisingly well, it's a little tough to hold but everything was responsive and I was able to finish races with flying colors (even a surprise streak of 1st place wins!). I then tried it out on Goldeneye Wii and this is where I hit a disappointing snag. While the buttons took some getting used to, the joysticks were giving me a hard time. Since the buttons are laid out in such an odd angle, I kept mistaking "left" for "up". It's not a crippling flaw but the learning curve is just a pinch too steep. While managing to get kills, my performance was affected this time. If anything, I can say that i've killed people in Goldeneye with a chainsaw.
To shake things up, I test ran it on some emulators I have on the Wii. I tried out some Super Mario Bros. 2. Took a bit to get used to but was playable. Finally, I gave it a try on some Atari games. Mostly because I wanted to finally play Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a chainsaw. This is where I got the most joy out of the controller. Since Atari controllers only have a joystick and button, the button layout made no difference. I totally shook the chainsaw whenever I got a kill.
My final game was Mrs Pac Man for Atari and it was great. It's unfair to judge since Mrs Pac Man only requires a joystick but screw you, i'm controlling Mrs Pac Man with a chainsaw.
So has my opinion changed? Not much, I didn't think it would replace the Gamecube controller but it's still a sweet collector's item with some purpose. Even if it didn't work at all, it's still a gorgeous hunk of plastic with fantastic detail. I'd give it a higher recommendation than most other critics but I wouldn't go as far as saying throw out your old controllers. Keep it around to spice up some old Gamecube and Wii games, and show it off to your buddies when they come over for a Smash Bros. tournament. You may not win but damn if you won't look good losing.
