Makarov might have continued to believe in any other of his children, but not is own grandson, because Makarov’s truly given up on Ivan, and he’s currently on the fence with Laxus.
This arc was an exploration of the Dreyar family dynamics, and Makarov’s personal flaws, even as the ‘perfect Gramps’ that everyone in the guild loves.
