Now that they're free, Conan and the kids set up a couple of traps for the robbers. The traps are pretty childish distractions, and feel similar to the vibes of episode 17 (one of my favorite eps!)
Conan also mentions having a fireworks ball, so I guess this item is canon now, since it's only been in the movies before this. Even if it doesn't end up being used in this case, I think it'll be used it in the future since they went out of their way to mention it.
He's unsure if Rumi will be willing to help. Meanwhile, she's planning her own escape, doubtful that Conan's plan will work.
Rumi notes that the leader has a lethal weapon, something Conan seems to not have noticed. I'm not sure if he is genuinely unaware, or is keeping it to himself for now.
Rumi is fine with the others getting injured in her escape, but Haibara senses her intentions and stops her train of thought.
I love Haibara's expression at the end! While Rumi does not have much faith in Conan's plan, maybe she has enough faith in Haibara. Perhaps Haibara also noticed the weapon that the leader had.
Part of what makes their dynamic so interesting is how attached Haibara is to Rumi, even though she is someone who has no problem putting Ayumi and the others in danger. It makes me even more curious about what kind of past could have had.
I think Rumi would have been kind to her with ulterior motives, but Haibara would be the type to pick up on that. Maybe it was Rumi's hatred for the Organization that brought them close back then.
I'm hoping we get a glimpse of their backstory in the next chapter!
When they face off against the robbers, I would love to see a scene reminiscent of Haibara's introduction! Idk if we'd ever get another gun scene or anything, but it would be great to see her and Rumi deal the final blow in the escape plan. I really want to see them team up <3
Once again, One Piece is crazy good this week and Oda amazes us with his writing skills.
First, even though it was fun to follow along Yamato's pilgrimage, it's also fun to see all the cove requests. This week is especially sweet.
And we pick up where we left off last week; Rocks is being Domi Reversi'd by Imu. But, as with other fruit powers, Rocks has something inherently human that keeps him from turning - he has the power of (free?) will, or haki that keeps him from going completely rogue right away.
I do wonder about the zoom-in on Imu's eye there, indicating that something Rocks said about the power of humanity really got to them.
And more lore! On Davy Jones himself! And you get the whole page, since there's so much going on here.
So, Davy Jones was some sort of ruler in the distant past, which Imu vehemently denies. And the promise mentione; is it something like the Joyboy prophesy?
(Eris, I love you)
I'm wondering about how well Blackbeard carries on Rocks' will based on this. Here Rocks is defending his friends, even though Harald attacked him on the way to God Valley; in contrast, Blackbeard and his crew has said several times that they're only in it for themselves.
I wonder if that's how Rocks saw his crew as well, or if Harald was just an especially good pal.
Also, interesting that Imu seems to equate Rocks with Davy Jones himself. Wonder if that came up when Rocks broke in to the Flower Room all those years ago?
First, look at those wings springing from his cape!
Second, look at the pure force in Rocks' hit!
Third, look at how enraged Big Mom is (even though she's still presumably angry at Kaido for eating the fruit she was going to feed to her own children) at the perceived treachery!
And Rocks doesn't stop there; Whitebeard is next.
I don't remember where I saw it, but it is touching that Whitebeard doesn't lift his weapon against his old captain, bur rather opts for a block.
The force that split a mountain.
This is just such a beautiful panel. That dramatic shading! The light grey of the background! The stark contours of the falling mountaing!
The panelling is exquisite, Eris with Teach running straight towards the mayhem and Rocks.
And we have so much happening over a few pages! A snoring treasure chest being taken away by the Roger pirates, Rayleigh being worried for Roger, and someone with weirdly similar demon wings to the Domi Reversi-afflicted people standing behind him?
I wonder if this will be Dragon's Sabaody moment; when he realises how strong he needs to get to protect those he wants to protect?
And Ginny, Iva and Kuma, with their incredible proportions (I wonder what tribe Iva belongs to, or maybe they're just a human with a huge head)
Is it Dragon that Kuma sees there? It doesn't look like the shore, so it might well be Dragon who he saves.
Eris, I love you.
Accepts what she cannot change, capable, sees the options in front of her (even though they include a cannon pointed in her face) and is solution oriented.
I wonder if the "it was too early" is the same "too early" as Roger's crew will meet on Laugh Tale in a few years' time?
I also wonder if those are the last words Teach will hear from his mother.
Again, a whole page, since they are just so good this chapter.
Eris, being caught between a Rocks and a hard place.
Kuma, saving the day.
The sheer power of Rocks, splitting a marine ship in two at that distance.
Imu is still vieweing Rocks as Davy Jones himself. I wonder what sort of long-term vengefulness and resentment led to that weird little quirk.
Garp and Roger, more worried about their men than themselves. They are so similar. I love them.
What a dramatic panel! Rocks, towering over the two men (who are no slouches themselves!); the wings; the rubble on the floor and the noise in the background.
And as people have been speculating...
...we're being set up for a mercy killing.
It's hard to say if Rocks knew that Kuma managed to paw away Eris and Teach, but since Imu didn't seem to know that little detail, it would seem that Rocks will go to his death thinking he killed his own wife and child.
Oda, you magnificent bastard. This hurts so.
Also, I wonder if Garp knows more about the Voice of All Things that Rocks seems to be using than Roger, since Roger has the same sort face as when he heard the Sea Kings in a flashback or another.
Oda keeps delivering.
I give this chapter heart-wrenching pathos and three thumbs up.
Oh she KNOWS! Oh I'm so happy!!!!! Of course Haibara should be smart enough to know, to have noticed while on that camping trip, she wasn't just dumb and didn't notice what Rumi was doing, oh I'm so so happy! My girl is allowed to be SMART!!!!
Also lol @ Rumi as usual
Love how she's allowed to be evil (for now). Go queen!
