Cystic fibrosis (CF) is predominantly a lung disease but is also characterised by impaired skeletal muscularity and a reduction in fat-free
FAT-FREE MASS LINKED TO LIVER FUNCTION IN TEENS WITH CF
A study in the U.K. shows that fat-free mass - the lean mass in muscles, organs, bones, ligaments and tendons - in adolescents with CF was significantly lower in those with CF-related liver disease.
Results also show that physical activity increases fat-free mass. Fat-free mass was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis.
CF mortality has been shown to be more strongly linked to low fat-free mass rather than a low BMI.
