The Central Corridor (CT, MA)
Welcome to my new Transit Proposal Showcase series, where I’ll be showing off a number of relatively obscure transit proposals that have advanced to various stages of study!
For the first showcase, we have the Central Corridor line in Connecticut and Massachusetts, which has been studied on a number of occasions but has never gained the necessary traction to actually be funded. The most recent study of the proposal was in 2017, and proposed two to six daily round trips along the corridor with stops as shown here.
The Central Corridor would bring service between New London, CT and Brattleboro, VT, making five other stops in Connecticut and three in Massachusetts. Of these, the two most notable are in Massachusetts: first off, Amherst is a major college town that lost Amtrak service in 2014, and the return of service would be a major benefit to the town and its students.
The other notable station is Palmer, which in fact lies along the tracks of Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited, which does not currently stop at the station. Adding an Amtrak stop in Palmer would allow for direct transfers between the Central Corridor and the Lake Shore Limited, which notably would connect the Central Corridor to the major city of Springfield, which is central to the region. This would allow for passengers to transfer to other parts of the region’s rail network without being required to pass through Brattleboro or New London.
However, since the Lake Shore Limited runs only once a day and has frequent major delays (especially in the eastbound direction), this would be far from ideal for the one-stop ride between Springfield and Palmer—and as such, other options would need to be considered to provide an adequate connection. Here, I propose three likely scenarios should service along the Central Corridor be implemented:
Palmer to Springfield shuttle bus:Â a shuttle between the Palmer and Springfield stations with direct through-ticketing.
Two-Line Solution: splitting the Central Corridor into two lines—one between Springfield and New London, and the other between Springfield and Brattleboro via Amherst.
East-West Rail: should the MBTA implement its proposed frequent service between Springfield and Boston (which I plan to discuss in a future installment of the Transit Proposal Showcase), a station in Palmer would be an obvious choice. This would allow for frequent Palmer to Springfield service, with easy transfers to and from the Central Corridor.

TMEA Agrees Financing #Deal Worth Tsh2.8Bln with Central Corridor
TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) and the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA) have signed a financing agreement geared towards strengthening and enhancing the Central Corridor Transport Observatory (CCTO).
The financing will specifically improve monitoring of the Central Corridor performance in-order to support evidence-based advocacy and decision making to remove trade…

New Apartment Building Proposed for Parking Lot on Pershing (5510 Pershing)
A new, 165-unit apartment building is proposed for a large parking lot at 5510 Pershing Avenue in the City’s DeBaliviere Place neighborhood. The current owner of the lot is shown as Kilamanjaro IVC and the contractor is listed as Klitzing, Welsch and Associates. A “zoning-only” building permit application was received by the City yesterday to construct the new multi-family structure. If approved by the City’s Zoning Section, the project may move forward.
We do not have renderings of the building at this time, but will post them as soon as they become available.
Below is an aerial of the site:
The lot with the tennis courts just across the street (5539-51 Pershing) has its own multi-family proposal. You can read more about that development here. If both projects are built, very few gaps in Pershing Avenue’s already dense streetscape would remain.

Four New Homes Headed to Skinker-DeBaliviere (5792-98 McPherson)
Four new single family homes will be constructed atop vacant lots at 5792, 5795, 5796, and 5798 McPherson Avenue in the Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood. The owner is McPherson 2001 Land Company. Four building permits each valued at $100,000 were issued to contractor Martin Jaffe this week.
The homes will likely be identical to the others built on the 5900 block of McPherson by the same owner over the past several years. Below is a shot of some of the homes that are now completed on the north side of the block in their construction phase.
The 5700 block of McPherson was once Skinker-DeBaliviere’s emptiest block, with nearly half of its parcels being vacant lots. This new round of building will fill in the western corner of the block and reduce some of that emptiness.

Six New Townhouses Coming to Bohemian Hill? (1703 S. Tucker)
The St. Louis Redevelopment Company, LLC has applied for a building permit to construct six new townhouses at 1703 S. Tucker (at the corner of Lafayette) in the Bohemian Hill section of the City (technically within the Peabody Darst Webbe neighborhood). The permit is labeled as “zoning only”, which means the city’s Zoning Section must approve the land use for the site prior to any further work or permit issuance.
The architect on the project may be Anthony Duncan, who has been tasked with designing several outside-of-the-box projects in St. Louis.
One such project is a shipping container structure in the Grove, a project that seems to be stalled. Below is the rendering for that project found on Mr. Duncan’s website:
In this early stage of the Bohemian Hill project, there are no known renderings or sketches of the proposed Bohemian Hill infill. If we discover such images, we will be sure to post them on this blog.
Nevertheless, it is significant that there is a residential proposal for this large and highly visibly vacant lot. For years the entirety of Bohemian Hill seemed to be threatened with demolition by the encroaching Gilded Age development to the west that now includes a Walgreen’s and local grocer Fields Foods. In fact, in the mid-2000s, Gilded Age even produced a rendering that showed the remaining blocks of Bohemian Hill replaced with a combination of new housing and shops.
If approved, this project could solidify the Bohemian Hill remnant’s preservation. Other early 2000s-era infill exists at 13th and Soulard, shown below:

The six townhouses would be constructed on the vacant lot visible in this photograph. The Old City Hospital, now a residential building known as the Georgian, looms in the background:
