It was a day of "before and after," a little trek around town knowing that some of my photos had become something like historical documents.

When, in 2022, I was taking photos of high-rise construction in the area, I looked at this cluster of low-rise buildings and wondered "how long before they're gone for high-rises?" Answer? Like, three years. Late in 2025, the plot was razed and new construction begun. The first I noticed really was as I was taking photos of yet other projects; down an alley I saw this:

and said "Oh, there are going to be more!"

Now, it looks like this:

and strangely the corner car park remains. It's even in the architectural rendering:

there to the right at the bottom of the image. What's amusing is that the rendering still includes Chauncey Village

highlighted in the close-up view. Funny, 'cause Chauncy Village (as seen below in the middle distance behind its car park, 2017)

disappeared for what's likely to be the largest high-rise complex at this intersection. Which is a good segue to the following series.

In a previous post from November, I illustrated how this behemoth is literally casting the adjoining street into shadow, including on a historically significant Louis Sullivan design. But--what're y'gonna' do? Progress! right?
