i can assure you there is the exact same thing in the uk, but what a lot of people who are against the welfare state are too blind to see is the social and physiological barriers that are in place for people who live off benefits - if someone is born into it, they stand little chance of getting out. The education system is against them from the start, they have the rest of society labeling them as 'chavs' and members of the 'underclass', so what can they do?Â
As you can probably tell I'm pretty passionate about this, and have no shame in admitting I come from a Marxist perspective.
Also I'm guessing the Cold War did little for American perceptions of Communism and Socialism ;)
