"Who says there's no love between me and Lady Qiao? I admit, I married her for Panyi. But after spending time with her. I saw that she's not only beautiful but concerned for the people. She has the talent and bearing worthy of my wife." - Shao Wei (The Prisoner of Beauty C-drama)

Ahhhh itโs been so long since Iโve written a drama review!! I just finished watching The Eternal Love (ๅไธๅฎ ๅฆ) and I love it so much. The plot was intriguing and enjoyable and the script and characters were hilarious. Please please do give this show a watch, I think it is really worth it! The opening theme had the two leads crying and being sad so I was like โoh no is this gonna be a tragedy or somethingโ but I was SO WRONG. This show is hilarious!
Spoilers ahead!!
I think this has to be one of the best wuxia dramas Iโve ever seen. The pacing was just right, it was not as draggy as some other shows. And I think the fact that it was a web drama let it have moreย โprovocativeโ humour? There was definitely a lot more kiss scenes in this drama than the average wuxia. For something that was pretty low budget, I think they did a great job with the show. I felt so satisfied after I completed the show.ย
The storyline was pretty solid, although there were some inconsistencies at some parts regarding the switching of Qu Xiao Tan and Qu Tanโer. And I loved the humour in the script. The way modern terms were used in the show made it even more funny, especially with Liang Jieโs portrayal of the character. There were so many moments in the show that made me laugh so hard. Another detail that was pretty funny to me was the fact that there are apparently 14 princes but we only ever see three.
There were some parts of the story that made me goย โuhhhโฆ.โ such as when Lian Cheng told Xiao Tan that he would give her what she wanted (the divorce) if she pleased him in bed. As a girl, that made me a little bit uncomfortable. I didnโt like that Lian Cheng used sexual favours as a way to persuade Xiao Tan. Although the end of that scene was kind of hilarious, when Xiao Tan yelled that she was not satisfied by him either and then in the next scene she became Tanโer. I think they downplayed Tanโerโs response too much, because if it were me, knowing that my own body had been violated like that without my permission, I would have been devastated and furious at Xiao Tan.ย I wish Tanโer and Xiao Tan had more time to spend with each other in their separate bodies.ย
I think what felt random was the element of magic in the show? Because the last few episodes after Qu Tanโer (SPOILER!!!!) died, were the more boring ones for me. It would have been nicer to see more of the two leads in the modern world and stuff, because the whole thing about the two tribes and them hating each other and stuff felt rushed. But I think it still worked out in the end. It wasnโt terrible, but it raised some confusion while I was watching.
I donโt think I know any of the actors in the show prior to watching, other than Xing Zhao Lin who plays Mo Lian Cheng, the 8th Prince. Iโve not watched him in anything else before this, but I knew he was in Princess Agents. So all the actors are actually new and I was surprised by how well they acted. Especially Liang Jie who played two roles, the noisy, tomboyish Qu Xiao Tan and the gentle, demure Qu Tanโer. The way she was able to switch between the two characters was so good.
Wang Rui Chang who played the crown prince and then Mo Yi Feng later on was also really good. He basically played almost three characters, because there was his original character Mo Yi Huai, then later on theย โevilโ version of himself and finally Mo Yi Feng. He rarely smiled throughout the whole show, but when he does heโs so cute!!
Xing Zhao Lin was really lovable as Mo Lian Cheng. He did such a great job playing Lian Cheng and he had such good chemistry with Liang Jie, their scenes together were always a joy to watch. Their scenes feel like they could be too cheesy, but I think the two of them made it work so well. They were so cute to watch. I like that his character is very unlike those in other wuxia shows where the guy is so easily swayed by his family when they say that his wife is terrible and stuff. He stood up for Xiao Tan against his family so many times whether or not she was there, it was quite satisfying to see a male lead finally do that.ย
Also, I canโt believe heโs only one year older than me. I thought he was at least 25.ย
Other characters I adored were Jing Xin (Sun Yi Zhu) and the 14th prince (I canโt find the name of the actor). Jing Xin was one of the funniest characters to me and she made the show so much more hilarious. I liked that she was so trusting of Xiao Tan despite knowing that she was not her original mistress. Sheโs so adorable and the way she was shown trying her best to please the two mistresses she had made me laugh. One of my favourite Jing Xin moments was when she tried to translate Xiao Tanโs letter to Tanโer the first time.
The 14th prince was another character I really liked. The show would sometimes hint at something going on between him and Jing Xin but it was never explored, so that kind of frustrated me a little. It would have been cute to see the two of them back in Dong Yue trying to take care of Lian Cheng and Xiao Tanโs child.ย
Even till the end of the show, the show never lost itโs brand of humour. I lost it when Xiao Tan told the demon king to chantย โI am a bitchโ, letting him believe it was a secret mantra that would help him escape his prison.
Iโm so happy that they got a happy ending though! Although it would have been nice if there was an explanation to how Lian Cheng was able to cross over to the modern world as well. It left so many unanswered questions for me though. Such as, what became of Dong Yue afterwards, what about THEIR SON? Iโm not sure if thereโs going to be a sequel because the narrator at the end kinda hinted at it when he saidย โHow will Lian Cheng survive in the modern world?โ. I would actually like to see a sequel of their love story, mainly because they are both SO CUTE together and I have a huge attachment to the characters now :โ)
Please, please watch this show I love it so much, it was quite unlike any other wuxia show I have watched. Despite the low budget, occasionally bad audio and cheesy cgi, the story, characters and humour more than made up for it.

"Last year I was at a small bar that's the first time I saw her. I didn't go inside, instead, I stood outside and watched her for about five minutes. Of course, she didn't know this. I can still recall my thoughts at that moment. I have to meet her I have to go inside buy her a drink and get her number tonight. I knew exactly what I was thinking I knew, I knew she was the one. But I have no idea how to approach her or what to say to impress her. She is so pretty. I was scared to make any mistakes. Trust me. I was really afraid of screwing it all up. Well, what can I even say, she is so perfect and I might need to spend the rest of my life seeking her love. So, I'm not in a hurry at all." - Lin Yi Yang.
I really want to like this ๅง็ drama, especially with my Taiwanese favorite Jasper Liu as the โๅฐโๅฅถ็. I like the ages, it is refreshing to see a 40 something year old hot mama and a 30 something year old hot man (who doesn't have children that we know although that would be a nice twist). What is not refreshing?
All these ridiculous tropes that are in the plot not as a fun way to make fun of the tired old stand-bys like this cringe meet not so cute pictured above. Ughhh gag me. It is not cringe because of the ages; it's cringe because I want serious acting even in a slice of life dramady such as this. Bai tole! I hope Nothing But You breaks all the stereotypes; even if it doesn't I'm prepared to love it because, well, WL and ZYT but please don't do this to us again. A proper age-gap romance is so needed in C-Drama land this year. This ain't it!
I don't know if I can continue. I want to. I love that Yin Tao's character is addressing the utter crappy hand dealt most older women, let along a divorcee with a child...I really want to like this but it keeps feeding cliche after cliche and I want to give up.
What do you think? Have you given it a chance? Does it get less cringey? For a drama with such a strong name as Viva Femina, you'd think there would be an actual feminist vibe. Not feeling it.

Just finished watching Accidentally in Love on Netflix and it's such a cute little drama. Loved the colors, the college where they filmed is gorgeous, the supporting cast was great and the main relationship was super cute! Loved how their relationship went down.
