"Un altro elemento caratterizzava se non le modalità, certo la percezione delle sopraffazioni uxorie. In una società tutta costruita sui valori patriarcali, per un uomo non poteva che essere lacerante e umiliante la scelta di rivolgersi a un tribunale a causa dei maltrattamenti subiti da una donna. Oltre che per la sporadicità dell'oggetto, le cause intentate contro i soprusi delle mogli erano assai rare proprio per la fisionomia dell'identità maschile.
