On Catherine St. close to Park st in my childhood town there was a large white town house a little further back from the road than usual. It was surrounded by trees and in my small mind it looked like I lived in a forest. Walking by it now it is, of course, a small patch of thin trees and tall bushes. A forest to a child.Â
I lived there with my mother. My parents are no longer together. I remember feeling like I was in the jungle. My memory of the place is hot. Summer. Sticky.Â
The house itself was very tall. Even as an adult I found it tall so as a child it was a castle. It was white and the white paint was not fresh. Flecks of black and pieces of it chipped away here and there.Â
I thought it looked haunted. I thought it WAS haunted. I have two memories that I think are from different times though they are awfully similar.Â
I was outside running around. I don’t remember what level of the town house we lived in. I think I was being loud. Perhaps just being a pest. Someone didn’t like what I was doing.Â
I don’t remember if I was summoned (I must have been) but I remember still being outside-ish (maybe at the door) and looking up an impossibly long flight of stairs. It was overcast outside I think. Or maybe just the shelter from the trees.Â
At the top of the long dark stairwell was a person’s shape. It was not my mother. It was chastising me. Perhaps for being too loud outside? I don’t know. I only know that I could not see any features. It was a black shape/silhouette of a person. Scolding me. I don’t know why I think this is evidence the place was haunted. It just gave me the creeps.Â
