There are two main factors that damage permanent ladle lining castables. First, excessive cracking occurs from repeated use. This is due to the castable’s inherent shrinkage or excessive water addition, which causes excessive linear shrinkage and, with repeated use, widens the cracks. During segmented casting, the castable fails to form a single piece at the joints, resulting in transverse cracks that widen during use. After repeated use, gaps develop in the asbestos sheet near the ladle shell, releasing stress in the permanent lining and causing cracks to widen. Second, insufficient castable strength during disassembly can lead to surface damage.

After the construction of the castable is completed, there should be enough natural drying period so that most of the moisture in the refractory layer can be precipitated, in order to prevent a large amount of moisture from not being discharged in time during the furnace baking, causing the refractory layer to burst and fall off.
