→ Princess Caroline Matilda was born on July 22, 1751, in London. She was the daughter of Prince Frederick Ludwig of Wales and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and a sister of King George III of Great Britain. Caroline Matilda was raised in a secluded family atmosphere away from the royal court. At the age of fifteen, she was married to her first cousin, King Christian VII of Denmark and Norway, who suffered from a mental illness and was cold to his wife throughout the marriage. The young queen lived a lonely and isolated life at the royal court. The king left Denmark in May 1768 for eight months; he brought back a German doctor: Johann Friedrich Struensee, who was appointed the royal physician. Deeply disappointed by the lack of love in her marriage, Caroline fell in love with Struensee. The queen gave birth to Frederick VI and Louise Augusta; the latter is rumored to have been Struensee’s daughter. The king became more passive, isolated, and less involved in government as his mental health deteriorated. He entrusted more and more of the daily state affairs to Struensee. He implemented a huge reform program, which angered the king’s inner circle. Christian’s stepmother, Queen Dowager Juliane, surrounded herself with conspirators who wanted Struensee gone. On January 16, 1772, Struensee and Caroline were arrested. Caroline and Christian were divorced in March, and she was exiled to Celle, Germany. A conspiracy against Juliane, her son Frederick, and Christian was formed: the plan was to put Caroline and her son Frederick on the throne, but she passed away before it could be carried out. Caroline Matilda died suddenly of scarlet fever on May 10, 1775. On her deathbed, she wrote a letter to her brother in which she proclaimed her innocence.
