Recessive red pigeons
There are various genes for colour in pigeons that cause different melanins and different shades to be displayed. Today I’m going to look at the gene called ‘recessive red’.
‘Australian Performing Tumbler’ by Graham Manning is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. This recessive red pigeon also displays some other interesting genetic traits, such as its pale eyes and its ability to somersault while flying.
Recessive red is causes a pigeon to be coloured a sort of copper, reddish-brown all over. It doesn’t matter whether or not the bird carries other genes for different patterns; recessive red will ‘override’ them and cause the bird to be a single smooth shade of brown.
Recessive red is, as its name suggests, recessive. To display the trait, a pigeon must only have copies of the gene - it cannot carry a copy of another gene that is dominant to it.
So male pigeons, who carry two colour genes, must have two copies two display the colouration.
Female pigeons only carry one colour gene, so they only need one copy to display this trait.
I am going to make another post in the future about sex-linked genes in pigeons, but for now, you can just appreciate how interesting these birds look!
