Headcanons:

Nate’s rebellion is the quiet sort. He’s not loud and boisterous but instead opts to sit silently and listen while his grandfather gives him poignant instructions. He then, of course, proceeds to ignore every word.

Instead of the plan that’s been laid out since before Nate was even given a name, he did the following: 

Graduated from St. Jude’s with a solid 3.0 GPA. Barely.

Attended Columbia with a major in Communications.

Did not marry Blair Waldorf.

Did not have a family with Blair Waldorf.

Has not run for political office. Yet. 

Throughout college, Nate volunteered and interned at a variety of nonprofits. Once graduated, he continued working for nonprofits until deciding to pursue politics after being encouraged by his supervisor to do so. Nate realized that he couldn’t outrun his name, and though the privilege that it gives him has never failed to make him uncomfortable, he was reminded that he could do good with it. 

To the ultimate behest of his grandfather, Nate began working as an unpaid intern on the Democratic candidate's campaign for mayor. The election was grueling and labor-intensive, requiring very late nights and the pulling of every single string that Nate could grasp onto. In the end, the candidate came out on top, and Nate earned himself a promotion from unpaid intern to office manager. From there, he’s slowly worked his way up to Campaign Manager.

Nate is good at what he does and is highly sought after in the Democratic world of politics. He’s attentive, passionate, and his name gives him the access and pull that candidates crave when running for office.

Nate has toyed with the idea of running for Mayor himself but still struggles with doing what his grandfather always had planned for him. He knows he could do some real good in New York, but he wonders if the people that he helps get elected can do better. He also worries about all of the dirt that Gossip Girl posted regarding him and his family, but he worries more about all that she never posted.

Nate still drinks and smokes weed regularly. The frequency of such activities increased after the death of his best friend, Chuck Bass. Nate has hired his own private investigator in hopes of helping find the culprit.

Headcanons:

i. Lola, despite being both a Rhodes and a van der Woodsen, didn’t grow up nearly as comfortable as the rest of her family did, or even in Manhattan. Her mother, Carol Rhodes, was estranged from her family and therefore not entitled to any of their wealth. Carol decided to raise her daughter away from the Upper East Side and chose Miami instead. Lola grew up to be very hardworking and worked a variety of jobs, from waitressing to grocery clerk. She wasn’t brought up expecting things to be handed to her. ii. From a very young age, her dream was to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a movie star. Getting there obviously wasn’t a walk in the park. With her limited funds, all the money Lola made went towards acting classes. That’s where she met Ivy Dickens, another aspiring actress. iii. Her last year of high school, Lola applied to Juilliard thinking nothing would come of it. Surprisingly, her audition got her in and she was even offered a scholarship that covered most of her tuition. Manhattan, however, had always been off-limits to her. Her entire childhood, Carol made it clear she wasn’t to step foot in the Big Apple. She didn’t want her daughter anywhere near her family and the pull of the Upper East Side. Thinking she had no other options, Lola lied to her mother and told her she was attending Michigan State University. iv. Lola might’ve gotten away with it if it weren’t for her mother’s scheme to get her daughter’s inheritance money with the help of Ivy Dickens. Despite trying her hardest to stay away from the Upper East Side, Lola eventually ended up getting mixed up with Nate Archibald after meeting him at a party she catered at. A bunch of events led her to figure out that Ivy Dickens was pretending to be her and that Carol was the one who orchestrated the whole thing in order to get the money that was rightfully Lola’s. To make things even more traumatic, she also learned that Serena was actually her sister and not her cousin. She was the result of an affair between William van der Woodsen and Carol. v. While she’s been away, Lola has made quite the name for herself in Hollywood. She’s gotten multiple roles that have led her to be nominated for an Oscar just the previous year. Her career is still young, but she’s very careful with what movies and series she chooses to act in and, thankfully, has a great team behind her. vi. Given her job, it should come as no surprise that Lola has no found herself back in Manhattan to film a new limited series. She hasn’t warned Serena or Nate of her return and doesn’t plan to for now. The idea of seeing them again and risking getting swept up in the Upper East Side’s drama is terrifying, but she hopes Manhattan is big enough for her never to run into her past again.
