There is always that odd moment when you wake up in the middle of the night, not really sure why or what woke you up. That sudden wakefulness that seems almost like someone has woken you up, but you're all by yourself. It's always bothered me, but I kinda realized something special about it the other night. Sometimes I wake up and I wonder if somewhere, who knows, that maybe the person my heart is tethered to has rolled over. Or maybe they've moved a little and their arm touched the space where I'm supposed to be. That little spot right next to them where I should be curled up, cold feet meeting under warm blankets and shared breaths on soft pillows. Somewhere, my other half is sleeping soundly and they've moved, waking me up forever away in my own bed. And whether it is real or it isn't, I'll always think of it that way now. It makes the random 4 am wake up a little less annoying to know that somewhere there is someone who is having a hard time sleeping because I'm not beside them. Plus, if it wakes me, it means that every now and again they wake up when I roll over. Maybe they're thinking about me too and don't even realize it. I bet sometimes we are both laying awake staring at blank ceilings and wishing for each other, not even realizing what we are wishing for. Just knowing that for some reason sleep is evasive and that a little piece is missing. Somewhere, my other half is rolling over and taking up my half of their bed. Maybe I'll sleep a little better when they're here and I can wrap around them to keep them from rolling over. Until then, I'll cherish my late night wake ups, just because it means they are thinking of me, whoever and wherever they are.
