Even in late autumn the upright perennial Strobilanthes wallichii (hardy Persian shield, cane head, Kashmir acanthus, wild petunia) will produce tubular purple flowers, curved over at the tips, either singly or in pairs. The plant develops a woody base with spreading roots.
