In sex work discourse, like in all left-wing discourse there's a very strict hierarchy of who is and isn't the most oppressed and therefore has a right to speak on their oppression, and at the very top of the hierarchy are people who have sex (are raped) for money, and at the very very bottom are people who do online only sex work. I'm not suggesting that these two things are the same - they are not. It is generally much more dangerous to be a prostitute than it is to be a camgirl, and the potential for traumatic experiences in being an OnlyFans creator is nothing compared to the potential for traumatic, even life destroying experiences for a prostitute. I'm not trying to compare the two. The problem is that like in all of these spaces it is allergic to nuance and it embraces the most extreme voices, which creates this sense that prostitution is the only truly dangerous form of "sex work" and in comparison, camming or even stripping are pretty much as safe as eating an ice cream cone. It's yet another insidious way young girls are groomed into the industry, believing that there is some massive distinction between these things, that camming or having a fanpage are nothing at all like sleeping with men for money, they don't carry any danger, they don't carry the same or even a similar stigma, they don't carry the potential for trauma - you're in control the whole time, right? How could anything bad happen? The girls who are groomed into the industry using this idealization of selling your body online have no idea how easy it is to be traumatized by an interaction with a man online, they have no idea the lengths these men will go to find them in real life, they have no idea that while they've "chosen" to do this, many of the girls they see on the front pages of the camsites they broadcast on are either trafficked or under the control of a pimp, and that they could be next, that even doing this kind of job makes you a huge target for trafficking, that for many women this will just be the first step in a lifetime of being abused in various parts of the sex industry, because it IS a pipeline. Because this framing that creates such a huge divide between selling your body online, on a stage or directly has manipulated them into believing that they're in some kind of -lite version of it with virtually no consequences. It creates the illusion that you can prostitute yourself without prostituting yourself, and nearly all that it entails.
