prompt #5: hallmark-esque returning to hometown after years [ao3]
Jenna Cameron had no intention of seeing Liz Ortecho again.
Theyâd met in a college town in 2010âJenna was on leave and Liz was stressed over finals and they were both looking for a distraction. Theyâd talked for too many hours in a bar that didnât say anything about their underaged patrons and had stumbled out a little drunk and a little handsy. They hooked up in Lizâs dorm and Jenna stayed the night. They ate breakfast together, talked, laughed, spoke vaguely about staying in touch, hooked up one more time before Jenna had to get ready. She had a plane to catch.
They didnât stay in touch. There were too many reasons that they couldnât, too many life things. Jenna was focused on taking care of her sister and hating the men she was surrounded by. When she finally got out of the military, she bounced around for a while to find somewhere that felt right and she ended up landing in a small town called Roswell, New Mexico.
Her coworkers were nice and the townspeople werenât bad if you ignored most of them. It was fine, for now. She could have fun hooking up with the broad shouldered deputy and she had the time to teach herself how to knit half a sock that was too big for any living human and she finished a book for the first time in nearly a decade. It was fine for now. It was like she was waiting for the reason she felt this was a good stopping point, waiting for something to happen that would make it make sense.
And then she saw Liz Ortecho.
âLicense and registration?â
âOh, this is bullshit. Itâs the middle of the night and there is no reason for this unless youâre searching for a goddamn murderer that might be running, so, tell me, are you? Do you think I have a murderer in my car, hidden under a blanket in the backseat? Are you going to search? Or do you just see someone who isnât white as a sheet and thinkââ
âLiz?â Jenna asked. Liz froze as she blinked with the light in her eyes, so Jenna turned the flashlight to face the ground.
She didnât actually expect Liz to remember her. Hell, she hadnât expected to remember Liz. There was no reason for her to remember a one night stand, regardless of how charming she was. Jenna thought of her more often than she should when she knew she would never see her again. But here she was, somehow in the same small town eight years after theyâd met.
âJenna?â Liz asked, her eyes widening as recognition set in. Something twisted in her gut at the fact that Liz remembered her. Liz was memorable, sure, but Jenna? Sheâd never felt memorable a day in her life.
And yetâŠ
âWhat are you doing here?â Jenna asked at the same time Liz said, âWhy the hell are you a cop?â
âIâm, Iâm visiting my dad. I grew up here,â Liz said. Jenna almost laughed. Of all the places to feel like a temporary stopping place, of course it would be the hometown of a girl she hadnât been able to forget even after all these years. âYour turn, since when the hell were you planning to become a cop? I thought you hated the whole military environment, why would you go to the next closest thing?â
And all Jenna could think was she remembered something I didnât like.
âLife, I guess,â Jenna offered in lieu of childish awe, âIt was easy. Something I can do for now.â
âFor now,â Liz repeated. It wasnât a question. Just⊠for now. Not forever. âSo, uh, are-are you gonna search my car or whatever?â
âNo, no, you go. Go see your dad,â Jenna said. She couldnât actually remember if she checked her license and registration. It didnât matter.
âYeah, okay, uh, was nice seeing you again,â Liz said, giving a small smile and a nod.
âYou too.â
Liz looked forward and put her car back in drive, but she barely moved a centimeter before she slammed on her breaks again and looked over to Jenna with that familiar look in her eye. God, it was familiar. How could something she hadnât seen in eight years feel so familiar?
âMy dad owns the Crashdown,â she stated. Jennaâs eyebrows raised a little.
âThatâs where I get breakfast,â she admitted. Liz smiled.
âThen maybe Iâll see you around.â
âYou will.â
Liz drove off for real that time and it left Jenna frozen in her place. And it seems, just like it was for the last eight years, her thoughts were consumed with Liz Ortecho. Just, now, it was something within reach.
Because Liz Ortecho had come home and Jenna was, for some reason, already waiting.
-
Jenna Cameron had never been known for her restraint.
Quite the opposite, actually. She was impulsive and, while she never quite considered herself to have vices, she also never deprived herself. She was never irresponsible or stupid, but she understood humans had only so much time before they died and it was over. Why not chase after things that were good and do risky things that were always worth it?
It was how she ended up at nearly midnight, walking past the Crashdown.
There was no reason for Liz to still be awake and there was no reason for Jenna to be strolling past, but Liz was and Jenna was. She looked through the window and Liz was just dancing, enjoying herself, because what else did pretty girls do if not dance like no one was watching? Wasnât that a saying for a reason?
It was stupid and entirely built on some memory of kissing soft thighs while Liz giggled through her explanation of chemical compounds, but Jenna found herself knocking on the door with the confidence of a man who had never been told ânoâ in his life. Liz jumped and turned her head, clearly startled. Jenna just gave her kindest smile. She had no idea what she was going to say to her. âHow have you beenâ sounded too hollow, while âIâve been thinking about you every day for eight yearsâ felt too full.
âHi,â Liz said, a soft smile replacing her shock as she unlocked the door, âFunny meeting you here.â
âI felt like we got off on the wrong foot,â Jenna said, âWasnât exactly the best way to see you again after all this time.â
âYeah, officer,â Liz laughed, âMaybe you shouldnât have checkpoints.â
âTheyâre routine.â
âTheyâre pointless,â Liz corrected, still giving her that smile that told Jenna everything she thought about it. Jenna just nodded. She couldnât disagree.
âBut I wouldnât have known you were back in town, so maybe they arenât completely pointless,â Jenna said. Liz gave a playful glare up at her.
âWe get it, Jenna, youâre charming. This isnât news,â she said. Jenna laughed, looking around. It looked different at night. Picturesque, almost. Perfect place to be standing across from a girl sheâd missed for no reason. âSo, can I get you anything?â
âArenât you already closed?â
âI can make an exception for you,â Liz offered. Jenna smiled easily, biting the inside of her cheek slightly as she looked at her. Sheâd somehow, miraculously, gotten more gorgeous since the first time theyâd met. She didnât know that was possible. âIâll make you a shake, give me a few minutes.â
Liz hopped around to the other side of the counter, stealing glances over at Jenna as if she thought she was going to disappear. She had no intention to as she sat down on a barstool and leaned forward against the counter.
âWhat have you been up to?â Jenna asked, eager to keep the conversation going. Liz looked up at her a little wistfully.
âI was working on a study, boring biomedical research. It was for regenerative medicine so I could eventually start targeting more chronic illnesses and making them at the very least bearable, but our funding got pulled and I guess it just seemed like a good time to come home,â Liz said, shrugging.
âItâs not boring,â Jenna insisted. Liz smiled just a little. âI may not understand it, but itâs not boring. Besides, my sister does something like that. But Iâm sorry your funding got pulled.â
âItâs fine,â Liz said, shrugging her shoulder, âLife happens. Just gotta roll with the punches.â
âDoesnât make it suck less.â
âThatâs true,â Liz laughed, bobbing her head to a song that was playing faintly from the jukebox, âI didnât know your sister was into science.â
âSheâs a genetic engineer,â Jenna filled in. She left out the part where she got in trouble for whistleblowing. That seemed a little too heavy for a second meeting. Still, Lizâs face lit up.
âSeriously? Does she live around here?â
âNo, sheâs still in the military,â Jenna said. It wasnât a complete lie.
âWell, if sheâs ever in town, let me know. I love hearing new perspectives,â she said. Jenna nodded. She didnât actually know how sheâd handle her sister and Liz talking about smart things she didnât quite understand past a very, very basic level. It might cause too much fondness for her to handle.
âSounds like you intend to actually stay in touch this time,â Jenna teased. Liz whipped around and pointed a spoon at her, a playful glare on her face.
âYou didnât keep in touch either.â
âI was in the military.â
âAll the more reason for you to tell me where to send letters too. I couldâve written really long, obnoxious love letters and sent, like, boudoir pictures to make everyone you worked with jealous,â Liz said. Jenna laughed and leaned into the counter more.
âYou could do that now, though I donât know how thatâd fair in a police station.â
âFuck police stations,â Liz said simply. Jenna rolled her eyes and huffed a laugh. When Liz turned to her again, she gave her a very exaggerated smile as she batted her eyelashes. âSorry, Officer, forgive me?â
âYouâre forgiven,â Jenna said easily. Liz dissolved into laughter as she finished up the shake and placed it on the counter. âYouâre something else.â
âSomething good, I hope,â she said. Jenna nodded as she watched Liz push a straw into the drink and push it Jennaâs way.
âVery good.â
âThatâs what I like to hear,â Liz teased. Jenna took a sip of the shake and nodded her approval. Lizâs smile widened. âI still got it.â
She hopped up a little more and leaned over, her lips closing over the straw that Jennaâs had just been on. Then she looked up through her eyelashes and⊠She knew exactly what she was doing. Jenna shook her head just a little.
âYeah,â Liz said, falling back to her feet, âI still got it.â
They stared for a long time. It felt like they were 20 again, back in that shitty college bar and drinking when they shouldnât. Jennaâs heart picked up speed as if preparing to be tugged upstairs to prove that sheâd gotten better in the eight years between them.
âI still canât believe youâre a cop,â Liz said softly, âDidnât you want to do something better? I feel like you said you wanted to do something better.â
Jenna shrugged. âIâm 28 and I still donât know what I want to do when I grow up.â
âThatâs fair,â Liz said, âNot many people do.â
âYou do.â
âI got lucky.â
They fell into silence again, just staring. The jukebox shifted songs again and a song she couldnât quite remember the name of started playing. It was nostalgic in a way where the exact memory didnât come to her, but it just made her feel young.
âI havenât heard this song in forever,â Jenna said. Liz smiled, but it wasnât that big, bright one sheâd been giving all night. This one was just a bit more bittersweet.
âIt was one of my sisterâs favorites,â Liz said, tapping the counter, âI pretty much liked anything she liked, so I sort of have this one memorized.â
âI didnât know you had a sister.â
âShe, uh,â Liz said, eyes drifting around a bit before meeting Jennaâs again, âShe died when she was 19. Driving while drunk. Or high, or whatever.â
âIâm sorry for your loss,â Jenna said, empathy pulsing through her. She was already struggling as it was and her sister wasnât even gone forever. She was just in jail for something fucking stupid. She couldnât imagine losing her like that.
But Liz just shook her head and smiled. âItâs alright. Iâve had a decade to mourn.â
âYeah, but grief doesnât go away,â Jenna said. It probably wasnât the smartest thing to say in the moment and it sure as hell wasnât going to get her laid, but it was honest. Sheâd lost people and grief never really faded. It just got a little bit easier to manage, a little bit easier to work it into your day to day life.
Liz seemed to know that very well.
She licked her lips, fingertips grazing the counter as she walked back around to the other side. Jenna smiled softly as she hopped into the barstool beside her. Liz nudged her shoulder into hers.
âI used to wonder what would happen if I ever saw you again,â Liz admitted, âI didnât expect it to be here.â
âMe too,â Jenna agreed, âTo both.â
Liz tapped against the counter and then leaned closer against. Jenna took a sip of the shake before turning the straw to Liz. She took a sip and looked up to Jenna, staring for a minute. Jenna was pretty sure she could enjoy Liz staring at her for the rest of her life.
The first time they met, they had been exactly what the other needed. Something light, something new, something fun. Tonight, Jenna was beginning to wonder if theyâd met again at the right time to be what the other neededâa new start when they felt a little lost.
Liz leaned a bit closer and Jenna tilted her head down to match.
âIf I kiss you now, am I moving too fast?â Liz asked.
âTechnically youâve been stringing me along for eight years,â Jenna responded. Liz smiled wide and then moved up for a kiss.
My memory for certain things is shit. This is one of those things.
Maybe Gracie Hart and Eric Matthews from "Miss Congeniality." The movie was just fun, and they were fun, and I just really liked fun.
15 - favorite poly ship
In all honesty, I've only recently started exploring poly ships. I know, shame on me.
That being said, Bamenzo is it. The chemistry between Bonnie, Damon, and Enzo is unmatched. Bonenzo were canonically together, but we all saw the potential in Bamon, and you cannot tell me that Damon and Enzo weren't into each other. Very not platonic. All in all, sounds like a recipe for success.
29 - favorite crossover ship
Donât ask me how I found it, but somewhere someone propositioned the idea of Bonnie Bennett and Hermione Granger, and, yeah. Iâd be so okay with that. Two of my favorite badass, smart, powerful, ruthless witches? Yes please.Â
31 - favorite non-canon ship
At the moment? Probably Camecho. Something about Liz and Jenna's dynamic is just perfect to me. I love them too much.
send me a number and I'll give you my opinions on ships
My darling @rosaortecho asked me this forever ago and, like the idiot I am, I am just now getting to it.Â
âLuciferâ
Favorite female character - Mazikeen. I donât know how to describe it totally, but sheâs phenomenal. Her not understanding humans/human customs? Peak comedy. Her aggressiveness and punch first, talk never attitude? Love that for her.Â
Favorite male character - Lucifer Morningstar. That man devil angel is extremely charming, very funny, and hot as hell. đ„”đ„”đ„” (Iâm not even going to dignify that with a âpun intended,â because 1) we all know it was intended and 2) it was too easy and obvious.)Â
Favorite season - Season 2. I thought the introduction of Goddess/Charlotte was really interesting and funny, because she was a hoot and a handful. Plus, it was nice to see celestial beings and a family and not just God, his angels, and Goddess who??
Favorite episode -Â âLiar, Liar, Slutty Dress on Fireâ - 2x02. This was the first episode I saw and what actually made me decide to watch the series, so itâs nostalgic and holds a special place in my heart.Â
Favorite cast member - From the little I know, Tom Ellis. That man is just a hoot. I watched his âThirst Tweetsâ video from Buzzfeed and boy was I laughing.
Favorite ship - Deckerstar is surprisingly good for being the main ship. I almost never love the main ship, but here we are.Â
Character Iâd die defending - Trixie. She doesnât need me to, because that girl can handle herself, but still. Protect her at all costs.
Character I just canât sympathize with - Pierce/Cain. I do not have the energy to get into it.Â
Character I grew to love - Linda Martin. I never disliked her, but at the beginning she just kinda...existed. And then one day I realized how funny she was and weâve been best friends ever since.
NOTP - Pierce/Chloe.Â
âRoswell, New Mexicoâ
Favorite female character - In a show with Maria DeLuca, Elizabeth Ortecho, and Rosa Ortecho, how am I supposed to choose??
Favorite male character - Kyle Valenti. Sexy doctor with a heart of gold? I am here for it.
Favorite season - Season 1. The pacing, the twists, the mystery, the fake-outs. Just really well done.Â
Favorite episode -Â âSex and Candyâ - 2x06. Ignoring the threesome at the end, the episode had a lot to like. Kyle at Planet 7 was a very surprising but extremely pleasant twist, and it definitely needs to be brought up more. Plus those rhinestones! đ„°đ„°đ„°
Maria and Alex dealing with crazed twin cobblers was also quite entertaining.Â
Me:Â âMy favorite season is season 1!â
Also me: âMy favorite episode is not in season 1.âÂ
Favorite cast member - I donât know. I find Vlamis and TB annoying with their constant âVlamburnâ and Malex stuff, so I guess not them?
Favorite ship - Camecho. These two. Wow. I know theyâre never going to happen, and for the most part I do like Echo, but Liz and Jennaâs interactions never fail to be top shelf.Â
Character Iâd die defending - Maria and Kyle.Â
Character I just canât sympathize with - Jesse Manes, for obvious reasons. Stef too. Like, Iâm sorry she has a blood disease, but can she not be so...abrasive? Itâs like sheâs trying to make people not like her. Which, maybe she is, but itâs working. And she even had that shpeel about how expensive it was for her dad to keep her alive with his âfancy insurance,â but sheâs also opposed to universal healthcare?? Make it make sense. đ
Character I grew to love - Guerin and Isobel. Theyâre punks, but they definitely grew on me since the first episode, because (unfortunately) theyâre just so goddamn funny.Â
NOTP - Malex. I think they were toxic, and thereâs too many issues for them to work through I think. Plus the fandomâs obsession with them is annoying, so. And Iâm with you, #recastalexÂ

âIâve tried your coping mechanism. You wanna try mine?â
Liz looked up to Jenna, blinking maybe a little too innocently as she took in that smirk on her face. She didnât know much about the relationship she had with Max, but she did know itâd been explained as nothing more than a little fling to pass the time. A coping mechanism, if you will.
âWhat exactly does that entail?â she asked, shifting her body to face Jenna completely. Her eyes looked her up and down, biting her lip in that seductive way that Liz never understood. How did people even do that? It didnât matter, Jenna did it amazingly.
Her chest rose and fell with a breath and she said, âWhat do you want it to entail?â
Liz made a small noise of protest and she tilted her head. âToo vague.â
âWell, I guess it depends. We could go shoot, I have my gun in my car, but we could also...â
âAlso what?â Liz prodded. Jenna huffed a laugh and shook her head.
âNothing, letâs just go shoot.â
âNo, tell me, also what,â she urged, reaching out for the blonde and grabbing her wrist. Jenna stared at her hand for a moment, her eyes trailing up her arm and over her neck and lingering on her lips for a moment before meeting her eyes. Liz breathed in deep and couldnât help how strange it was that this didnât feel strange at all.
âWhen me ân Max used to hook up, it was to blow off steam,â Jenna said, that confidence never leaving her. It was like she knew exactly what she was doing. Liz grinned and pulled her closer. âI know youâre still pining after your dead lover, but I donât know what youâre open to in the way of coping.â
Liz scoffed, shaking her head. She pulled her even closer. Jenna went willingly.
âI donât know, Iâm pretty open to anything youâre willing to show me,â Liz insisted. Jennaâs tongue traced the inside of her teeth and she tugged Liz in completely, the only thing separating them being the bottle of wine.
âI suddenly understand what we have in common,â Jenna said. Liz grinned right back, pushing herself onto her toes to get a little closer. She could taste Jennaâs whiskey-laced breath on her lips and, God, that was otherwordly.
âMe too.â
Turns out, there was a lot more two people could do in a lab that they both knew Max would never.
