Today’s columbidae:
Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica)
Beautiful, large dark gray ground-dwelling pigeon with extravagant long plumes draping down the neck. These plumes are dark green, blue, gray, and bronze, giving the pigeon’s feathers a rainbow look. Tail is snow-white, but only fully visible when flushed. The bird’s bright white tail may serve as a “taillight” to guide others at dawn or dusk. It is the closest living relative to the Dodo bird and the Rodrigues Solitaire. Usually a very vocal species, but shy and difficult to see in the open. Inhabits small, densely wooded islands from the Indian Andamans to the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. Voice is a raspy one-note coo.
Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica), family Columbidae, order Columbiformes, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India
Believed to be the closest living relative of the now extinct Dodo bird.
