Definitely agree with this. It's pretty common for me to find one trait I have in common with a character and enjoy exploring that in fic/meta, but that's pretty different from identifying with the character, I think. In a lot of cases, the very fact that a very different person who I don't identify with has this trait in common with me is part of why it's so compelling. Like with Sophie in Leverage: I share with her a love of performance, dramatics, putting on and taking off masks, but I find her lack of core identity unsettling and repellent. That dissonance is interesting to me. I don't identify with her, despite that commonality, and that's the point.

Happy Valentine’s Day, I bear headcanons. Spock and Kirk, after retirement. They have an interview together because they’re famous starship captains, but Spock prefers to be known as the First Officer. They’re both past caring about decorum, so they show up dressed in civilian clothes. Kirk’s dug out his old green shirt and a jacket with a vintage NASA pin. Spock is bundled up. They’ve got a ton of in-jokes; the interviewer is bemused but entirely delighted over how affectionate they are. The vulcans are no longer scandalized—“It’s that science genius with his human again.” 

Like Rose, Jack would have happily spent the rest of his life traveling with the Doctor if he hadn’t been abandoned. Like I said above, Jack is a placeless man, and he could have been comfortable with a placeless life in the TARDIS. In so many ways, Jack is the Doctor, through a glass darkly. The Doctor, if he had left his home by violence instead of by choice. The Doctor, if he hadn’t had his loyal companion the TARDIS to guide him through the universe every step of the way. The Doctor, if he had something more of a hedonistic streak.

I definitely don’t have anything against Rita being “””ditzy””” – I put this in quotes because ditzy generally means preoccupied with feminine interests and mannerisms that are considered shallow – but I definitely have something against her getting kicked around by both Juno (and the narrative) all the time for it. The thing is that Rita is obviously a very good secretary, and nobody’s fool, but because she likes celebrity culture and male attention and following soap operas, Juno (and the narrative) feels entitled to sneer at her interests and dismiss them as trivial. I was really dismayed by that, and if it keeps on happening I’m not going to continue listening.
