For a while now, I’ve found myself wanting to diversify the posts on this blog. I love reviewing fics, but there’s so many stories that I read that I don’t have the time, or enough opinions to post about.

Friday Finds was one of my first attempts at diversifying my blog posts. However, the biggest issue with FF is how long it takes to find the stories, and how impersonal the post comes across (which is why I decided to only post it once a month). At this point, I began working on Rare Pair, because I wanted the chance to recommend stories that I’ve read - and show people how good writing can win you over to a pairing that you may have shrugged off in the past.

The rarepair for this post is Viktor x Hermione, which to me, is actually a rather distinct ship simply because it’s one of the few fanon pairings that has roots in canon. While Viktor wasn’t the victor in Harry Potter, here are a few fics that may just have you rooting for this pair.

1. Air by Calebski

Viktor had thought he might have loved her when he saw her by the Black Lake the first time, standing under a tree and trying, desperately, to make it look as if she wasn't waiting for him. But now? Now as she glanced up at him dwarfed by one of his old coats, snowflakes catching on her eyelashes… Now, he knew.

This was one of the first Krumione stories I ever read, and waiting for updates was my impetus for searching for more stories about this particular pairing. I love how awkward yet sweet Viktor is, and while Hermione is a bit less shrewd than in canon, the story does a great job of portraying her inexperience with boys in a wholesome manner.

2. A Kiss from a Rose by apisa

She never liked attending Quidditch games, but that changed when a certain Seeker caught her heart.

It’s short, it’s sweet, and it’s complete. Believe it or not, that’s actually asking for a lot with this pair. But in all seriousness, if you want something that feels like a slightly OOC Harry Potter rom-com - this is the way to go.

3. Puppy Love by ItWritesStuff (read at your own risk)

"It's bad enough that she's got a hopelessly love-struck Veela trailing after her to begin with, but it appears that this will be Hermione's most difficult year as the Veela in question had to be a famous one with too many paparazzi on his heels and adoring fangirls to spare." The veela trope isn’t one that I typically read, but the story just made the trope so funny that I couldn’t help wanting to read it. Sadly, both this story and ItWritesStuff’s other work, What They Don’t Teach You at Durmstrang are incomplete and haven’t been updated since 2018.

I had this idea I was going to write a middle-grade book about a fairy getting on the local kid’s baseball team and the parents on the opposing teams getting all pissed off because she was good and trying to get her kicked out for being a fairy, and then I realized there was no way I could do it without it being a heavy-handed allegory for racism and the world doesn’t really need another nice white lady writing an allegory about racism in kid’s sports.  But the start was really charming (or at least I think so)

No one cared one bit about the fairy thing when Chelsea tried out.  She could hit and she could catch and she could pitch like no kid you’ve ever seen. Fast and hard and she even had a curveball.  Jack Flamming hit the ball right at her off one of those wicked curves early in the season, and she caught it and threw it to second and got the double.  She was really good.  And she had a birth certificate (not all fairies do) so onto the roster she went.

Patrick Addison was kinda mean about her being a girl at first, ‘cause he’s like that, but she shoved him into the dirt down by third base and told him he couldn’t catch no better than a six-year and the only reason he was in this league was ‘cause of his age, and he shut right up after that.   But that she was a fairy?  Baseball isn’t the sort of thing where you have to cross running water, so no one thought it was gonna matter.  Plus, the team really needed a pitcher.  Charley Rosen had moved away, out to Minnesota of all places, and that just left Brian Whitmore, and he wasn’t awful, but he wasn’t very good either.

Viktor Krum x Hermione Granger

Jessica Brown Findlay is an inspired choice. I saw her play Ophelia a couple of years ago and she could 100% play the whole spectrum of Hermione’s personality

She is isn’t she!! Not obvious, but I’m into it. 

I have been dreadful at reading fanfic lately, mainly cause in between writing, and RL, everything has been far too hectic. However, these are a couple stories that I’ve started, and hopefully will be up to date in by the end of March.

I’m only on chapter 3, but it is fucking brilliant so far, like OMIGOSH. So far Luna is my favourite character so far, and Ginny is a close second. SO GOOD.

Things In Common by Colubrina

Ginny's resentment at her family's poverty explodes while shopping for school supplies. Under the cover of her mother's embarrassment, Lucius Malfoy slips a diary into her cauldron and suggests she'd be welcome in his home. Throw in a sorting into Slytherin and let the dark games begin. Slytherin!Ginny, Dark!Ginny, AU.

Collie’s writing is always devastatingly good, and I bloody adore this story, I have no words. I am in love with it so far, and the way Collie writes things never fails to make me stare in wonder at her talent. AGAIN, IT’S SO GOOD. Ginny is written extremely well, and I cannot wait to see what happens next, it’s driving me nuts that I haven’t read more of it yet. Have I mentioned that I love it?

His life was one of structure, regime, and obedience, everything was in formation lines. Everything except for her, Hermione. With her wild hair that sprang in every direction, she broke every rule in his overly dictated life, and he wasn't sorry for it.

Caleb’s writing always ruins me, and this story is no exception. I swear. This story is majestic, and just, I cannot. I have a few more chapters to read, but everything so far has just been, YES. Her OC’s seamlessly fit into the story and, I CANNOT. It’s so darn good.

Because every relationship is essentially just a stage, whether it's a friendship, a familial, or a romantic relationship. Theirs encompasses all three. Angst-heavy Remione AU with a side of Sirimione, rated M for language and adult content. For ShayaLonnie.

Notes: I would describe the amount of fluff that is in this is equal to a Carbon Monoxide poisoning. It slowly creeps up on you and before you realize how deep you’re in, you’re dying from how adorable everything is.
