awww thank you so much that's so sweet of you!!!! aaa!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖 i'm so glad you enjoy it and i really appreciate this 💖💖💖💖🥺🥺🥺🥺
yes, the pulpit in the book is in fact designed to look like a ship's pulpit! with a rope ladder that Father Mapple climbs “as if ascending the main-top of his vessel” and paneling painted “in the likeness of a ship’s bluff bows.” (from ch8 ‘the pulpit’):
and the real life New Bedford church that Melville references (which in the book is called the Whaleman's Chapel, but IRL is the Seamen's Bethel) also has a ship's bow shaped pulpit (photo my own from my visit in 2019):
(though i don't actually know how old this pulpit is and if it was built this way after the book's popularity)
anyway thanks so much for this ask; i really appreciate :3 🥺🥺🥺 those old pages still mean a lot to me. someday i want to go back and remaster some of the art but i still really like them.
