Pogueâs Basics: Money - Buy your own cable box, save hundreds
As though the cable companies werenât already milking you dry with the cost of the TV service, theyâre also charging you about $235 a year to rent the cable box (the one that changes channels and connects to your TV). Itâs about $7.50 a month per box. Most people have more than one TV, so they rent more than one cable box.
If your cable box also includes a video recorder (DVR), youâre paying even more. Now youâre talking $300 or $400 a year.
As it turns out, itâs 100 percent OK to supply your OWN cable box or DVR and eliminate those expenses!
At sites like Cableboxandmodem.com, you can buy your own replacement cable box for $120, which pays for itself in 16 months. Or a combination cable box/DVR for $200. That one pays for itself in 8 months â no service fees).
Now, part of the purpose of a cable box is security; the cable company wants to make sure youâre actually paying for all the channels youâre receiving. If you supply your own cable box, how will your cable company know itâs you?
Because youâll slip a CableCard into it. You can buy a CableCard for under $5 from the cable company, preprogrammed with your account information, and slip it into the back of the box youâve bought.
By the way: When you call the cable company to request that they send you a CableCard, donât let them play dumb. They are legally obligated to sell you one and even help you install it.
Sneaky, smart â and perfectly legal.

Pogueâs Basics: Money - Supply Your Own Cable Modem
At this moment, youâre paying about $10 a month to rent your cable modem, the gadget that brings high-speed Internet into your house. $10 a month, forever.
For no reason! Buy your own cable modem for $100, return the one youâve been renting, and boom: $120 a year in savings.
Before you shop for your own modem, make sure youâve found one that works with your cable company. Do a Google search for, for example, âComcast compatible modems.â
Once youâve ordered the modem, call up the cable company and let them know youâve bought your own. Itâs perfectly OK and increasingly common. Theyâll walk you through setting it up. Theyâll give you the address of a return center for shipping back the one youâve been renting.
And then theyâll take that $10 fee off your monthly bill!
How cool is that?
