Grand Cabin Club by Hello Wood near Csóromfölde, Hungary
Built next to six other installations during an independent international summer school in 2018. Organized by Hello Wood, a Budapest-based design studio and educational platform for architects. Students and architectures from all over the world were invited to collaborate and take part in the tiny house movement set in the depths of rural Hungary. The groups had to build movable, live-able, unique wooden cabins blending innovative design with environment-friendly approaches.
More from Hello Wood / @hellowood:
As a pilot for our #GrandCabin project we built this tiny house back in 2018 during our international summer school, Cabin Fever. Drilling in the last screw was an amazing feeling, can’t describe how proud we were of our team and everyone who contributed to this beautiful A-frame house. Swipe to see the interior as well, full of Hungarian designer furniture and accessories.
After rethinking, revisiting this project in the past year we are glad to say that we can bring this cabin to anyone’s home/backyard/pier/*name a place* and build it up there.

Woodcutter’s Refuge by Life Space Cabins in South West England
The clear direction for the build was to keep it simple: our client wanted a refuge to keep tools, equipment, and also themselves.
The materials used for the build were carefully considered to blend into the landscape where the cabin was situated. We chose to clad the roof and rear wall with corten corrugated steel sheets and vertical strips of cladding for the other elevations to give linear consistency. Light flow through the space was important, so we put in double glazed Crittall windows. Shutting the cabin away to protect it from the weather was equally important, so we worked with local blacksmith who handmade all of the latches and handles for the cabin and its shutters.
The feature of this cabin is its drop down window which uses a yachting rig set up to operate it. We worked with a rigging specialist to create this feature for our client which adds to the detail and thought that was put into this build.
The location did not favour the build. The cabin sits on a Devon hillside up from the Dart estuary across a number of fields. The onsite and offsite build was carefully thought about to make the build as easy as possible. However, building the cabin in February faced us a battle against two heavy snow falls which only enforced the original purpose of this Woodcutter’s Refuge.

A visit to The Buffalo Farm / @thebuffalofarm in Northern Ontario
Shara told us more about Buffalo Farm:
Our family moved 6 years ago leaving our suburban Toronto life behind. We started a small family business where we rent three unique handcrafted accommodations to people looking to escape the city and completely unplug and get off grid. Our latest undertaking was a 32-foot Buffalo Suite (Yurt) — an authentic structure, Canada’s only two-storey yurt. A one-of-a-kind experience, it boasts a 10-foot-long window overlooking our pasture where you can catch a glimpse of our three young Buffalos.
In many ways this project has been a massive labour of love between siblings and with the surrounding land we love so much. We collected all the balsam fir saplings from the forest around us and brought them back to the shop where we used a draw knife to peel the bark so we could dry them out. Balsam fir saplings because they tend to grow fairly straight and they’re a little easier to manipulate after steaming to make an ark in the roof. We hand tied thousands of knots to help us create a lattice fence which makes up the bulk of the exterior walls. We also handcrafted the furniture inside the yurt itself. We incorporated timber framing to the structure of the yurt which is one of the unique components of the structure in addition to the little loft space on the second floor where you can soak up natural light and watch the stars through the skylight.
