when your girlfriend rolls a natural 20 and DOESN'T get sucked into Vecna's realm (& changing your whole campaign's plan) :

and don't get me wrong, i loved watching it and in the absence of the earrings it made sense

but im gonna have to add this to my growing series of "what really happened in c1 and why i love it" posts

because in the original campaign, all of vox machina had earrings enchanted with the message cantrip, so they could function as long distance communication ear pieces

which meant that, when vax left them all in the acid trap, vex was secretly talking to him the whole time

(and sylas' mind control on vax in the original wasn't actually an order to attack his friends, it was just to make vax believe that protecting the briarwoods was his priority)

and there were three moments during that that absolutely killed me

the first was vex, after they escaped the acid, using it against vax, and crying into the earring, pleading for help because it was killing them - which actually made vax freeze in his tracks and unable to move, torn between the magical need to follow the briarwoods and the instinctual need to protect his sister - the briarwoods actually had to reapply the mind control to get him to move

the second was on vax's part - because he didn't see anything wrong with the briarwoods' plan anymore, so when vex tried to just make casual conversation to stay updated on what was happening, he answered her like in any other conversation.

until delilah asked him who he was talking to

and vax lied

matt made him pass a wis save to do it, but again, even though vax didn't consciously know there was anything wrong with delilah asking that (and he continued to be friendly with them), just enough of him broke through to protect his sister

and the third is just, so indicative of who vax is as a person

because when vox machina caught up and started the fight, vax didn't attack his friends, he was just confused and upset that vex would hurt their allies, and tried to break the fight up. because vax has literally said before "i am charmed at the drop of a hat", it's really easy to manipulate his love for people to include more people that it shouldn't

but it's almost impossible to get him to rationalise hurting people he cares about, under any circumstances

so the dissonance resolves itself in his mind as "everyone here is friends, why are we fighting???"
