Fe ddaeth Nia Davies Williams a Sian Owen i gyd weithio wedi i Sian glywed fod Nia yn chwilio am eiriau ar gyfer cân i gystadlu yng nghystadleuaeth Cân i Gymru eleni. Fel mae'n digwydd, roedd gan Sian gân yn eistedd yn y drôr ers tro. Roedd hi wedi ysgrifennu'r geiriau yn wreiddiol fel rhan o nofel, ond yn sylweddoli hefyd y bydden nhw'n sefyll ar eu traed eu hunain fel cân. Maen nhw'n sôn am ferch ar y traeth mewn gwlad boeth yn gwylio pobl yn chwarae gwyddbwyll, ac yn cymharu'r gêm gyda bywyd. Yn y gân, sy'n cael ei chanu i rywun o'r enw Cain, mae'r ferch yn dweud nad yw bywyd byth yn ddu a gwyn syml fel y sgwariau ar fwrdd gwyddbwyll. Rhywle yn y canol y mae bywyd go iawn, ac yn y 'sgwariau llwydion' y mae hi'n gweld ei dyfodol. Fydd Cain yn dewis bod yno efo hi, neu a fydd ôl ei droed yn diflannu oddi ar y traeth gyda'r llanw? Roedd Nia yn hoff iawn o naws anghyffredin ac amwysedd y geiriau. Mi arhosodd y cwpled a ddaeth yn gytgan i'r gân yn ei chof yn syth, ac o'r fan yma y tyfodd yr alaw. Roedd Sian yn hapus iawn fod Nia wedi deall natur leddf y geiriau wrth gyfansoddi'r alaw a'i bod hi'n llifo mor naturiol.
Nia Davies Williams and Sian Owen were brought together when Sian heard that Nia was looking for song lyrics to compete in Cân i Gymru this year. As it happens, Sian had a set of lyrics just waiting for the opportunity. She had originally written the words a few years ago whilst working on an unpublished novel, but felt they would work well as song lyrics. In 'Cain', a girl on a beach watches as people gather to play chess, sheltering from the sun under the trees, and she compares the game to life itself. The girl sings to someone called Cain, musing that life is never simply black and white like the squares on a chess board. Her future lies somewhere in the 'grey squares', but will Cain choose to join here there or will his footsteps disappear from the sand with the tide? Nia liked the unusual lyrics with their many possible meanings and the melody grew from a distinct couplet that stayed in her mind. Sian was happy that Nia's melody had captured the slightly melancholy feel of the words and loved the natural flow of the composition.
Pan Mae'r Haul yn Codi - Aled Ellis Davies
Daw Aled Ellis-Davies o Gaernarfon ac mae wedi bod yn aelod o nifer o fandiau llwyddiannus, gan gynnwys Am Dwrw, Amddiffyn a Hitchcock. Cafodd Aled a'i ffrind y syniad o gystadlu yng nghystadleuaeth Cân i Gymru 2012 ym mis Awst 2011, ond yng nghanol prysurdeb eu bywydau mi aeth y prosiect yn angof tan y funud olaf. Gyda'r gân ar ei hanner, roedd y gwaith cyn y dyddiad cau yn werthfawr iawn wrth i alaw'r gytgan a'r geiriau gwympo i'w lle. Mae Aled yn cyfaddef ei fod yn dueddol o ddechrau cyfansoddi caneuon ac yna'n eu gadael nhw ar eu hanner. Mae hefyd yn cyfaddef bod naws ddofn a ddigalon i lawer o'i ganeuon am ei fod yn gweld hi'n anoddach cyfansoddi cân sy'n codi'r galon. Er hyn, mae Pan Mae'r Haul yn Codi yn gân hapus a syml sydd yn estyn teimlad o hapusrwydd positif wedi cyfnod tywyll. Mae Aled yn gweld naws y gân yn debyg i R.E.M a'r Verve.
Aled Ellis Davies, from Caernarfon and has been a member of many successful bands, including Am Dwrw, Amddiffyn and Hitchcock. Aled and his friend had the idea of competing for Cân i Gymru 2012 back in August 2011, but in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the project was forgotten until the last minute. With the song only half done, the work that Aled put in before the closing date saved the day as the words and the chorus fell into place. Aled admits that he is guilty in the past of leaving songs unfinished. He also admits that the themes of his songs are usually melancholic, as he finds it hard to compose upbeat and happy songs. Despite this, Pan Mae'r Haul yn Codi is a positive and happy song which extends an uplifting message following a period of darkness. Aled sees influences from bands such as R.E.M and the Verve.
