Bystander Effect
So last night I went to get food from this cool burger spot and as I'm waiting for my food this girl and guy start arguing. The guy then pushes the girl and they start fighting. The guy grabs her hair as she's pulling his as well. This was enough for me. I jumped in the middle of this and try to help the girl push the guy off of her. After me; a 110 pound 5ft girl jump in other people jump in and escort the guy outside. After this is all over I look around at my surroundings with feelings of anger and disbelief. There was about 15 people at the burger place and all of them just sat and watched this fight unfold. When I was in psychology class in high school I learned about the bystander effect and thought to myself that's crazy, how could no one do anything. After experiencing this for myself, I have to say that I'm saddened and disappointed with my society. How can we live in a society where when people see injustice they do nothing about it, how can this be?
this just broke my fucking heart
social psychology: bystander apathy ->the more people there are the more that each individual expects someone else to take the initiative to help; the most ideal situation in any given danger is to have one witness who feels they have to take the initiative upon themselves. augh.
