All citizens must wear a mask — but women in face-covering Islamic garb could be punished.
I am no defender of the niqaab or the burqa (though I have no problem with the hijab or Jewish/Christian veils), and I don’t think that the criticisms of these garments should be labelled as “Islamophobia”.
That notwithstanding, the government has no business punishing people for particular clothing unless they violate codes of public decency (surely a far more pressing problem than extreme modesty).
There are valid cultural and social reasons for disagreeing with these forms of dress (or at least the cultural behaviour associated with it), but that doesn’t mean the state should overstep its powers in this fashion. France, and the other countries which have followed, are wrong on this one.

Freedom in Restriction, Restriction in Freedom
"The Burqa Debate" has been a hot topic in the Netherlands in recent years. Because of my own background (having lived both in Qatar, a conservative Muslim country, and the Netherlands) it naturally intrigued me to do some in-depth research about it. What I discovered was eye-opening. On the one hand I could understand the Dutch mentality of openness, but on the other I understood the cultural context in which women wearing the niqab live. To gain further understanding of different perspectives, I interviewed an anthropologist who specialized in Salafism, a Dutch-Moroccan woman wearing the niqab, and researched official reports on women wearing the niqab in the Netherlands. One could say it is a debate with many layers and viewpoints, but I chose to specify in the topic of freedom. And who is to say how freedom is defined? I hope to open people's minds, and look at the issue in a way that makes viewers aware of their cultural biases.

Women have a choice when it comes to the veil....
In My english class, these past few weeks we were covering the "burqa ban" in France, which was implemented this past April of 2011. This really got my angry, because of the justification by the French government of why they passed the law. To me it seems that the French government is publicly and intentionally attacking Muslim women. They presumably claimed that the only reason they passed the law is to take away the oppression Muslim women face everyday, since they are forced to wear the "veil" and its a symbol of male oppression and superiority. That is THE most ridiculous shit I have ever heard in my life. And this law goes against all the democratic values and principles they hold so high and mighty. By banning the burqa, isn't it taking away the choice for the women who want to wear it, and taking away their human right to choose. This got my HEATED and annoyed. I just can't wrap my brain around their idiotic outlook and view of the veil. If they actually took the time to understand the veil and Islam, instead of coming up with absurd conclusions, then they wouldn't come up with stupid ass laws like this!!!! First of all, no one should interfere with what a woman should wear or not wear, and by taking it to the legislative level really shows how developed they are as a country. What are we in, the cavemen era??? Stupidity!!!! In Islam, you don't have to answer to anybody, but Allah. Whatever you are going through is between you and Allah SWT and no one, not the government, not the society or ignorant individuals. Burqa, niqab, and the hijab are seen as a symbol of Islam and women have a choice to wear it or not, because there are endless interpretation about this topic, since Islam is such a diverse religion. And whether they wear it or not is between Allah and them, and NO ONE should judge!!!!
