           ‘ lydia has been doing so well at her new school-- i really hope this will be a brand new start for her. i made sure her a+ paper went straight to the refrigerator! ‘ that was something barbara had always dreamed of doing if she had a daughter of her own, and she was excited to have the chance now. of course, she couldn’t actually pin up the paper herself, but she got to pick the magnet and everything, which was a nice touch.

———SHE HAS THE GRACE to wait until he’s turned before grinning, so he’d not see her mirth at his expense. she’d not meant to startle him. her words were simply a fact: everyone who’d hover about and scold her for doing anything in the least bit interesting is asleep, so she’s got to seize her chance while she has it. out her bedroom window, quick climb down to the first floor, and away through the dark to the van dort residence. anyway, she’s always liked the night. it’s mysterious.

smile is quickly concealed when he returns his attention to her. wendy takes the offered seat. she peels a leaf from her dress and sets it aside; it must’ve gotten stuck to her on the journey over.

eyes alight. wendy leans in, conspiratorially. ❛ you musn’t tell anyone else this as it’s a secret, but annie prescott says she saw a spirit on old mill hill. it was dark, just like tonight, and she was walking home from her aunt’s when she saw a white orb floating in mid-air. she could hear music, too. she froze. it floated towards her ——then vanished. the music stopped. and the poor girl ran all the way back home. ❜ she pauses for dramatic effect.  ❛ so i’m going to old mill hill to investigate. ❜
