I was told by a friend that the bureaucrats who make people’s lives wretched don’t realize how much they’re hurting them. They’re just doing their jobs and don’t see anything else. But it makes me wonder about all those bureaucrats in Germany and the U.S.S.R. that handled the paperwork sending millions to terrible suffering and slow deaths. Did the fact that they were just “doing their jobs”—seeing nothing else—make their acts any less evil?

I have become acquainted with the indifferent cruelty of bureaucrats within the criminal justice system. Day after day they plod along, adding to the sum total of human suffering, moving people around like markers in a board game, but with much less interest. Or perhaps it is as a friend suggested: They make the lives of those who pass through their hands wretched without really knowing how badly they hurt them. They’re just doing their jobs and see nothing else.
