Sequel not a remake
Oooookay. I woke up this morning, stumbled into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee and - what else? - got online to see if there was anything new about the “reboot.”
One of the first articles, over at The Verge.com, popped up to inform me that show-runner Monica Owusu-Breen’s has implied via Twitter that this will not be a reboot, but rather a sequel, centering around the story of a New Slayer.
Here is the tweet, posted July 26:
My response:
I still have trepidation, but am feeling better about the whole thing. A bit.
I think we can all mostly agree that no one wanted a remake; but a sequel? That’s another story entirely. There are so many opportunities for stories in the ‘verse and a new Slayer could get a whole new generation into this franchise.
I think we can safety assume that the comics will not be held as canon - that for the purpose of this sequel, the show ended with Season 7. Televising the crazy events that comprise Seasons 8-11 would be...difficult to say the least.
As verge points out, “...whether the new series acknowledges the comics or dismisses them, there’s certainly a canonical basis in the first show for an entire series that focuses on a new Slayer without taking the original ones off the table. “
Truer words were never spoken.
I’m assuming how this will be handled is that it will be assumed that Buffy is dead, and a new Slayer has been called. Will we see Buffy’s death? Will SMG come back for a cameo? Or will this sequel take place literally 20 years since the show ended? Will this Slayer be just one of many who has followed Buffy or will she be the next?
What are your thoughts, friends? What do you want to see in this sequel? Are you okay with the comics not being taken as canon? Sound off! I want to hear what you think!

don’t mean to be dramatic but if what i’m hearin’ is right this is an outrage, man. we need a btvs spin off not a reboot. btvs still has a lot of fans after all these years !! !!!!!!! ! and it sounds like some ( if not all ) of the original cast would like to take part in it !! new slayer, new cast continuing after where the original series left off w/ occasional cameos from the original. that’s how to do it. i mean they left it so wide open. i just don’t fuckin’ get it.
I'm excited for the reboot! Are you ready to be strong?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor James Marsters says he would be happy to reprise his role as Spike in the upcoming reboot.
“I think we’d have to get some really good lighting together to sell Spike...what would be great is if he comes back and he’s like, ‘Buffy, you look terrible. I still love you of course.’ That would be fun.”
In a recent interview @sarahmgellar said that in a potential Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot she would cast @zendaya as the chosen one and I am here for it! Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a cult classic, was a series with a diversity problem. News of a new season provides an opportunity for a different kind of storytelling.
